FLORESVILLE -- It was standing room only in the American Legion Hall Oct. 18 as candidates for local offices met to answer questions and discuss relevant issues.

Sponsors of the event were the Wilson County News and Texans for Constitutional Government, a nonpartisan citizens’ group. Both organizations presented questions for the candidates, before opening the floor for audience members to participate.

Although only seven of the invited candidates were in attendance, the American Legion Hall was packed with constituents seeking both answers and information.

Chris Burchell, the Republican challenger to Sheriff Joe D. Tackitt Jr., made points with audience members upon answering a question regarding the constitutional rights of Wilson County residents.

Burchell said that he believes in the rights of law-abiding citizens to carry concealed weapons for their protection. Law-abiding citizens don’t cause problems with firearms, but drug dealers, thieves, and those living outside the bounds of the law do, Burchell said.

Burchell and Lt. Chad Clark, who is seeking the office of constable in Precinct 2, were the only candidates for county offices in attendance.

Three of the four mayoral candidates for the city of Floresville -- Diana Garza, Christina Jarzombek, and Tom Robles -- were present to make their case to voters.

Garza and Jarzombek iterated their knowledge of the city charter and their desire to limit the duties of the mayor to what the charter explicitly outlines. Robles referenced his military service throughout the evening in an effort to convey experience and leadership.

A hotly contested local race -- for Floresville City Council, Place 1 -- saw only one candidate in attendance. Jim Miller delivered a back-to-basics answer when asked about a sports complex.

Miller said the complex would not move further, if he is elected, until the city’s water and sewer issues are taken care of and infrastructure issues are solved.

Although Floresville Councilman Mario Morones is running unopposed, he also attended, offering his perspective on local issues.

In attendance: Sheriff candidate Chris Burchell; candidate for Constable Pct. 2 Chad Clark; Floresville mayoral candidates Diana Garza, Christina Jarzombek, and Tom Robles; and candidates for Floresville City Council Jim Miller and Mario Morones. Not present: Sheriff Joe D. Tackitt Jr.; candidates for Wilson County commissioner Albert Gamez Jr. and Ricky Morales; candidates for constable George Scoggins, Donald Stevens, and Martin Rodriguez; candidate for county attorney Daynah Fallwell; Floresville mayoral candidate Johnnie R. Gomez; and candidate for Floresville City Council Jesse C. Flores. Also on the ballot, unopposed, will be Anna D. Gonzales, running for county tax assessor-collector.
