1918-2012

Dorothy Marie Rentz Cardwell passed into heaven on Monday, Oct. 22, 2012, after a brief bout with cancer. Dorothy was born on Aug. 15, 1918, to Robert Walker and Ida Weathers Rentz in Rockport, Texas.

She grew up in San Antonio and later in Edinburg. She graduated from Edinburg High School in 1936 and attended Pan American College. She married Henry Mitchell Cardwell on Dec. 24, 1941. Together they had four children, Paul Allen, John Michael, Ellen Marie, and Lynne Annette. Dorothy had a lifelong love of reading and of nature, which was evident in her garden where she created a habitat for wildflowers, butterflies, and songbirds.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; brother Stanley Rentz; husband of 53 years, Mitchell; son John Michael Cardwell; and grandsons John Robert Cardwell and Jeffrey David Cardwell.

She is survived by son Paul Cardwell and wife Billie of Nixon; daughter-in-law Penny Cardwell of San Antonio; daughter Ellen Wundt and husband Jim of Belmont; and daughter Lynne McCarty and husband Charles of Westminster, Md.; grandchildren Paula Hester and husband Guy of New Braunfels, Patricia McGrail and husband Adrian of Houston, Katie Still and husband Ray of San Antonio, Angie Decou and husband Rutty of Belmont, Kyle Wundt and wife Sarah of Belmont, and Jonathan McCarty of Westminster, Md.; seven great-grandchildren, Hailey and Riley Hester, Callum McGrail, Jeffrey and Andrew Decou, and Jackson and Ainsley Wundt.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 24, from 5-8 p.m. in the Finch Funeral Chapel in Nixon.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Nixon First United Methodist Church.

Memorials may be made to Nixon First United Methodist Church, 410 North Franklin Ave., Nixon, TX 78140; Nixon Public Library, 401 North Nixon Ave., Nixon, TX 78140; or to a charity of one’s choice.
