Beavers shut out Trojans in non-district play
Stephen Harlos (34) of Falls City grabs a handful of pants and hangs on as Eric Wiatrek comes in to help with the tackle. The Beavers manhandled Charlotte en route to a 40-0 win last Friday.
Falls City 40
CHARLOTTE -- After knocking off the Pettus Eagles to open District 14-1A DII play two weeks ago, the Falls City Beavers stepped away from the district this past Friday night with a trip to Charlotte. The Beavers were coming off a 40-0 win over Pettus, and duplicated the effort with a 40-0 win over the Trojans.
The Beaver passing game continued its evolution in Charlotte Friday, as the Beavers threw more times than they ran the ball, and tallied 252 yards of offense through the air. A nice mix of running plays netted another 131 yards on the ground, and the end result was a six-touchdown night for Falls City.
The first touchdown came early in the first quarter of play as senior quarterback Cameron Soto connected with fellow senior Phillip Lyssy for 39 yards and the score. Less than two minutes later, Soto ran in a touchdown from 2 yards out and the Beavers were on top 12-0.
Things settled down a bit from there, but Falls City got rolling again in the second quarter as Soto outran the Trojan defense for 39 yards and a touchdown. The 2-point conversion attempt failed, but the Beavers were on top 18-0 and in clear control of the contest.
With 4:18 to play in the half, the Falls City passing game put another 6 on the board with a 5-yard pass completion from Soto to Cody Houdmann. Travis Glover ran in the 2-point conversion, and the Beavers took a comfortable 26-0 lead into the break.
In the opening minutes of the second half, the Beavers scored their fifth touchdown of the night on a 3-yard touchdown run by Jon Swierc. Kendall Kanak ran in the 2-point conversion, and the Beavers led 34-0 with 10:50 to play in the third.
The final touchdown of the game came with just under two minutes to play as junior quarterback Dean Gaskamp ran in from 2 yards out to make the final score 40-0.
The Beavers threw the ball 24 times, completing 18 passes to 14 different receivers. Stephen Harlos was the team’s leading receiver with two catches for 55 yards. Austen Camber had three grabs for 23 yards.
Soto led the ground game with 52 yards and two touchdowns on just four carries. Gaskamp ran twice for 32 yards.
The Beaver defense played great throughout the night, holding the Trojans to just 79 yards of total offense. Eric Wiatrek and Royce Leonhardt led the way with six tackles apiece, followed closely by Lyssy with five. Lyssy and Leonhardt each had sacks, as well.
The win lifts the Beavers to 5-2 on the year. Falls City will return to district competition this week, as the team hosts Woodsboro this Friday, Oct. 26, at Beaver Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
