Pirates beat up on Brahmas in cross-county rivalry
Dusty Mosier (left) of Stockdale and Blake Lyssy of Poth both go up for the ball during the Pirates’ Oct. 19 win over the Brahmas at Bobby Russell Field.
STOCKDALE -- It’s always a big deal when Poth and Stockdale play, and this year’s matchup between the varsity football teams was no exception. The Pirates came into the game with a 5-1 overall record, while the Brahmas sat at 4-2. They looked fairly evenly matched on paper, but Poth proved it was the better team on this night, and skipped town with a 34-6 win.
The Pirates had a bit different look with sophomore Thomas Krawietz in at quarterback, but the team didn’t skip a beat, and racked up 336 yards of offense en route to the win. Stockdale was happy to have senior quarterback Hunter Pierdolla back under center, but the Brahma offense struggled to get into a rhythm, managing just 192 total yards and 6 points.
The first touchdown of the game came late in the first quarter as Poth capped off a drive with an 11-yard touchdown run from Krawietz. The conversion attempt was no good, but the Pirates were on top 6-0. Then, after a quick stop, Krawietz and the Pirates struck again with a big 45-yard touchdown run from the sophomore. The 2-point conversion attempt was no good, and the score stood at 12-0 with 39 ticks remaining on the first-quarter clock.
The back-and-forth continued for the teams, but the Pirates made it an 18-point game as Krawietz ran for his third touchdown of the game from 3 yards out with 5:16 to play in the half. He then ran in the 2-point conversion, and Poth led 20-0.
Stockdale got a little something going before halftime, and Dusty Mosier connected with Jacob Urrabazo for 9 yards and a touchdown. The point-after attempt was no good, and the score stood at 20-6 at the break.
The Pirates were set to receive the second-half kickoff, and Poth senior Zach Lyssy was ready for action. Lyssy fielded the ball at the Poth 20-yard line and made his way past the Brahma defense for a touchdown. The run went down as 80 yards, and the Pirates went up by another 6 points.
After holding the Brahma offense at bay once again, the Pirates got the ball back and went back to work. Poth drove down into the red zone, and scored its fifth touchdown of the game on a 15-yard passing play from Krawietz to Lyssy. Krawietz then ran in the 2-point conversion, and the score stood at 34-6 with 6:47 left to play in the third.
The teams moved the ball with moderate success throughout the remainder of the game, and the score remained at 34-6. For Stockdale, it was a tough loss that puts the team’s playoff hopes in jeopardy. For Poth, it was proof they are among the best in District 15-2A DII, and keeps the Pirates in a three-way tie with Karnes City and Dilley for top honors.
Krawietz completed three of five passing attempts for 50 yards and a touchdown. Lyssy caught the one pass for 15 yards and a touchdown, and Phillip Garza caught the other two passes for 35 yards. On the ground, Krawietz led all Pirate runners with 143 yards on 15 carries. Garza ran nine times for 72 yards, Blake Lyssy ran twice for 35 yards, and Zach Lyssy had two touches for 17 more. Sean Clancy ran four times for 14 yards and Koby Pruski ran twice for 5.
On the other side of the ball, Mosier completed his one passing attempt for 9 yards and the touchdown, while Pierdolla completed just three of 11 passing attempts for 19 yards. Urrabazo was the leading receiver for Stockdale with 9 yards, Mosier and Tristan Marquez each had a catch for 8 yards, and Josh Vela caught a pass for 2 yards. Matt Valadez had another 100-yard game with 132 paces on 23 attempts. Pierdolla ran 10 times for 11 yards, Darion McMahan had six carries for 14 yards, and Mosier ran the ball three times for 12 yards.
The Poth win lifts the Pirates to 6-1 on the season and 4-0 in district play. Meanwhile, Stockdale falls to 4-3 on the year and 2-2 in district play, which puts them just out of the playoff picture in fourth place.
The Pirates will face one of their biggest opponents of the season this Friday, Oct. 26, as the Karnes City Badgers take their perfect district record to Poth. The Brahmas will be on the road this weekend, as they travel to Bloomington to take on the 0-7 Bobcats. Kickoff for both games is set for 7:30 p.m.
