About politics and other things
October 31, 2012 | 9,825 views | 119 comments

A friend pleaded with me last week to issue one final statement about the importance of voting. He has been active in Floresville politics, but he knows not to stick his neck out too far. So he wants me to do it instead.

Well, not quite, but almost. I guess he figures that mine is out there already, so what’s a little more? It’s not easy for some folks to be openly active on the local political scene. There can be negative consequences from business relations as well as familial associations.

You see, in Floresville, it’s long been assumed that you will vote for anyone who is a relative. It’s sad for those of us who focus on issues, to see votes valued so little that they would go to the closest relative -- or the first $5. Just sayin’.

There is one popular folk tale, which I have good reason to believe is true, that back in the day when a lot of people couldn’t read, voters used a simple trick to know who to vote for. A string with knots tied in strategic locations was anchored at the top of the ballot, so the voter would mark wherever the knots indicated.

Neat trick, huh? Could this be part of the reason that Floresville is in such a mess? The city continues to spend money (taxpayers’ money) on unnecessary projects, ignoring the fact that we soon will have no choice but to pay for essential water and sewer upgrades that have been neglected.

The current city administration also refuses to plan for repayment of the bonds that have been refinanced for the Event Center. A balloon payment will come due Sept. 1, 2016, in the amount of $1,335,000. How will the city continue to make million-dollar annual payments after coasting along paying only $100,000 annually? There is no plan.

Enough of this. These are issues that must be faced in order for the city to stay solvent. It’s time that folks, including the Chamber of Commerce, get involved. There is one man running for council who does have a plan. He is Jim Miller.

I don’t know if this is what my friend expected to read, but this is what’s in my heart. I don’t usually endorse candidates because frequently they say one thing and do another, but we have seen Miller go to bat for taxpayers often enough to know that he’s not in this for himself.

Being so controversial could not be good for business, and he has spent hours studying city finances, state election laws, and the city charter. This is time that he could have devoted to his family and his business.

Miller also has spent thousands of dollars out of his own pocket for legal fees -- fees that, incidentally, should not have been necessary if the city had done its job more efficiently. He has shown by his actions that his intentions lie with what is in the best interest of taxpayers.

Floresville is not alone in its conundrum. Karnes County also is embroiled with its own issues, so being that I’m out on a limb anyway, I may as well go all the way. There is a candidate for Karnes County Commissioner Pct. 1 who deserves kudos. Gary L. Deskin puts his money where his mouth is -- literally. He has pledged in person, on the radio, and in print to accept only $1,000 of his commissioner’s salary for the four years of his term. The remainder of his salary will be donated back to the county Road Bridge Department where it is desperately needed.

People like these two are few and far between. They deserve our vote, not because they happen to be our relatives, but because they have a plan and will follow through with that plan for the betterment of the city and county.

Early voting extends through Friday. The General Election is Tuesday, Nov. 6.

Please vote.
