LA VERNIA -- Community members in the city of La Vernia will see a smoking ordinance implemented, following a special meeting Oct. 25 of the city council. The ordinance prohibits smoking inside all restaurants and businesses in the city limits.

After several hours spent in a workshop Oct. 24 discussing the pros and cons of the smoking ordinance, it was approved in the special meeting the following day. Council members D. Bradford Beck, Bobby Richter, Randy Leonard, Eloi Cormier, John Richter, and Mayor Robert Gregory discussed new businesses coming to La Vernia, such as more restaurants, hotels, and retail stores, and the benefits of the smoking ordinance for the business owners.

Several community members also attended the meeting to speak and express their support for the ordinance.

An issue raised regarding the ordinance was whether or not business owners could allow smoking in buildings after closing.

“We don’t want an after-hours smoking club,” Gregory said.

The ordinance was amended to specify that no smoking will be permitted in the buildings at any time.

John Richter shared his concerns with the council about the ordinance and suggested they table its approval until they received more feedback from local business owners and how it would affect them. The council voted, however, and approved the ordinance in a 3-2 vote.

After the meeting, the mayor said he had discussed the ordinance with several business owners prior to the meeting and found that most businesses in La Vernia are smoke-free already.

“Everyone is already doing what this ordinance is saying,” he said.

According to City Secretary/Treasurer Angela Cantu, the city will supply business owners with “No Smoking” signs and copies of the ordinance in the very near future.

The ordinance will go into effect as soon as the council receives approval from the city attorney.

Also during the meeting, the council heard from Clarence Littlefield of Southwest Engineers regarding the city’s municipal well projects. Littlefield presented the city’s options for drilling wells through the Wilcox Aquifer or the Carrizo Aquifer.

Currently, the city is working to replace Well No. 5 and drill a new municipal well; while these are pending, the city is purchasing some water from the Canyon Regional Water Authority. According to the mayor, the purchase rate will go up substantially in 2015.

“If we have our own water source, we’re not depending on anyone else for drinking water,” he said.

Gregory said the council will conduct a feasibility study and discuss all options to make the most educated decision possible.
