Floresville Musical Club has fiesta-theme at meeting
The Floresville Musical Club met for its first meeting of the year in the First Lutheran Church in Floresville on Oct. 9.
The theme of this meeting was National Hispanic Heritage Month. President Peggy Tipton called the ladies to order. Peggy welcomed everyone and introduced the officers for this year, the committee chairmen, and the hostess chairmen. Peggy then asked head hostess, Shelley Ross, to introduce her hostesses for this month: Barbara Brissette, Alice Lackness, Ginny Byrd, Buel Massey, Olga Alvarez, Amy Carter, Mary Carrasco, Lillie De Los Santos, Judith Smith, Sally Marrs, and Cynthia Guerrero.
Sandy Vogel and her committee were thanked for the excellent job they have done in assembling the membership booklets. Also, thank-you notes were passed around from the St. Vincent de Paul Society for the donation last year, and also from scholarship recipient Elizabeth Garza.
Carol Richardson gave the treasurer’s report. Peggy reminded members of the Queen’s Rehearsal Dinner Oct. 10, and asked for volunteers if more help was needed. The guests were then introduced, and then birthdays and anniversaries that took place during the summer were acknowledged.
Lydia Martinez, program chairman, introduced the musical presentation for the day. The student performers were Dominic and Lia Rivera. Lia performed some flamenco dances and played the piano, while Dominic played some selections on the violin and on the piano. The ladies were also entertained by Richard Chavez and Martha Figueroa. Selections from songs by Freddie Fender, Patsy Kline, and other old-time favorites were enjoyed.
Delicious refreshments of taquitos, seven-layer dip, and tortilla cream cheese pinwheels were served. In keeping with the theme, the main table was decorated with a Mexican sarape and a piñata in a beautiful bouquet of flowers. The individual tables were decorated with colorful fiesta centerpieces.
