2 condolences

Johnnie Eugenia Conn Ortmann Talbert was called to join her heavenly Father on Sunday, Oct. 21, 2012, at the age of 91 years, 11 months, and 16 days. She was a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Johnnie was born on Nov. 5, 1920, in Marcelina, Texas, the oldest child of Eugene “Bud” and Flora (McBride) Conn. Johnnie had one brother, Hugh Lee Conn, and one sister, Dorothy Elvada (Conn) Starbuck.

As a young girl, Johnnie attended school at the Sunnyside Schoolhouse and later, when the family moved to the Three Oaks community, she attended school at the long-gone school in Dewees. When Johnnie had completed the eighth grade and was ready for high school, she moved to Stockdale with her aunt and uncle so she could attend Stockdale High School.

On Jan. 5, 1941, Johnnie married Charlie William Ortmann. The newlyweds moved to San Antonio. Charlie and Johnnie had three children, Dorothy Helen on Aug. 22, 1943, a son, Carl William, on May 17, 1948, and on Sept. 13, 1950, their third child, Connie Lynn. Johnnie sewed for the public for extra money and held a job working for Winn’s Department Store. In 1957, Charlie and Johnnie returned to the Three Oaks community.

Johnnie was a Girl Scout leader, a Cub Scout den mother, and a 4-H leader. She spent many hours working with her children and the children of the Three Oaks community. In the early ’60s, Johnnie got a job as a teacher’s aide at Floresville ISD. While she was there, Allan Drozd convinced her to go back to school to get her GED. She applied to San Antonio College and did just that. She was able to get a better-paying job within the school system. She became the school secretary at the Intermediate School. Johnnie loved her job. She enjoyed being around the kids and made many lifelong friends with the teachers who came through her building during the 21 years she worked there.

Johnnie’s husband, Charlie, passed away in 1967, and in 1970, Johnnie moved back to San Antonio. In 1972, Johnnie was introduced to a man named Royal “Tally” Talbert. Johnnie fell for Tally, and Tally fell for her. The couple married on Feb. 9, 1973. Tally had three stepchildren from a previous marriage and Johnnie had her three children and the two of them loved each other’s children as their own. Those children enriched their lives with 22 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. That’s a whole lot of love!

Johnnie and Tally loved to travel and did so most of their married life. They would take off in their RV for two or three weeks at a time and drive all over the country seeing the sights of this great nation. They made it to all 48 contiguous states and even Canada. They also took a trip to Europe when her son-in-law Gene and daughter Dottie were stationed in Germany. Johnnie was able to see 11 different countries while on that trip. Johnnie lost the love of her life in November 2008. Shortly thereafter, Johnnie fell and broke her back and moved into the Regency Manor Nursing Center in Floresville. Johnnie attended the Good Shepherd Church in San Antonio for many years, where she served on the Altar Guild and as a lay minister. She loved working for the Lord. She later transferred her membership to Beitel Memorial Lutheran Church, also in San Antonio. After Tally passed away, Johnnie attended church at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Denhawken. She was baptized on July 15, 1934, in Sunnyside. She was confirmed on Feb. 14, 1971, in San Antonio.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Charlie Ortmann and Royal Talbert; son-in-law Gene Sells; brother Hugh Lee Conn; sister-in-law Peggy Talbert; and several brothers-in-law.

Johnnie is survived by daughter Dottie Sells; son Carl Ortmann and wife Janice; daughter Connie Pruski and husband Robert; stepchildren Howard Talbert and wife Joann, Bill Talbert and wife Debbie, and Carol Shelton and husband Rusty; sister Dorothy Starbuck; sister-in-law Joann Conn; brothers-in-law Van Talbert, Don Talbert and wife Joyce, and Maurice Talbert and wife Katie; sisters-in-law Joye Sanchez and husband Tony and Chris Talbert; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Visitation was held on Thursday, Oct. 25, at 5 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. in the Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel in Floresville. A funeral service was held on Friday at 10 a.m. in St. John Lutheran Church in Denhawken officiated by the Rev. Ronald Windecker.

Johnnie will forever rest in peace in the Floresville City Cemetery.

My deepest and heartfelt sympathy to the family and to their friends. What a wonderful and sweet lady Miss Johnnie always was. She worked really hard in life to be able to provide for her children. God bless her.
