Nixon-Smiley 6
Cotulla 39

COTULLA -- After a thrilling win over Bloomington the week prior, the Nixon-Smiley football team was looking to close out its season in a strong way. Unfortunately, the Mustangs fell to the Cotulla Cowboys, 39-6.

Cotulla scored in the opening minutes of the first quarter, and then added a 2-point play to make it 8-0. The Cowboys added to their lead midway through the second quarter with a 28-yard passing touchdown, and then ran in two more to close out the first half with a 27-0 lead.

Cotulla scored again in the third to make it 33-0, and things appeared to be all but over. The Mustangs continued to fight, though, and eventually scored on a 9-yard run by Jared Van Auken. The Cowboys came right back down the field on their next possession, however, scoring a final touchdown on a big 71-yard run, and locking up the win by the score of 39-6.

All of the Mustangs’ limited yardage came on the ground. Tristan Newman led the team with 67 yards on 11 carries, followed by Van Auken with 56 yards and the touchdown on 18 touches. Miguel Hernandez added another 28 yards on 10 carries.

The Mustangs fall to 1-7 on the year, and 1-4 in district play. Nixon-Smiley will face Natalia this Friday, Nov. 2, in their final home game of the season, and will close out the year next week in Poth. Kickoff for both games is set at 7:30 p.m.
