Texas Army National Guard 36th Infantry Division Task Force Arrowhead Security Force Assistance Team held its deployment ceremony on July 31.

Capt. Thomas “Tom” Joseph Carnes III, Texas Army National Guard, is one of the senior officers on an eight- to 12-person unit designed to work with their Afghan counterparts to improve their logistics, intelligence, maintenance, administration, rule of law, and training capabilities in Afghanistan. Each team will deploy to various locations in Afghanistan to work with the Afghan army, police, and military units depending on the echelon and type of Afghan unit they are assisting.

Carnes is a 1990 graduate of Floresville High School and a graduate of Excelsior College. His military career has been more than 18 years, and includes deployments to Korea, Bosnia, Haiti, and Iraq. He has received various achievements, honors, and medals. Carnes has also served his community as a Bexar County sheriff’s deputy for more than 15 years.
