Area law-enforcement officers are investigating three serious crashes in communities bordering Wilson County. Two of the crashes ended with a fatality in each.

Joseph Roosevelt Waters, 28, of Metairie, La., was pronounced dead at 12:05 a.m. Oct. 29, after a near head-on crash on U.S. 181 near the intersection with F.M. 81 in Hobson. According to a report submitted by Trooper Scott Jendrzey of the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Highway Patrol, Waters was traveling southbound on U.S. 181 when his 1999 Chevrolet Suburban was struck on its front-left side by a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta driven by 24-year-old Justin Morgan Steenken of Floresville.

The report indicates that Steenken allegedly was traveling northbound in the southbound lane and that Waters had steered to the right in an attempt to avoid a head-on collision. The two vehicles then sideswiped and came to rest on the western shoulder of U.S. 181.

Steenken was flown via Methodist AirCare helicopter to University Hospital in San Antonio, where a hospital spokesman said Nov. 5 that he was listed in stable condition.

DPS also is investigating a second fatal wrong-way wreck that occurred Nov. 4 at approximately 12:30 a.m. between Nixon and Gillett on S.H. 80. DPS Sgt. J. Ryan Christian said a semi tractor hauling a water tanker was struck head-on by a Dodge pickup truck that crossed into its lane, which caused the two vehicles to burst into flames.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, for whom Christian did not provide an identity prior to press time Nov. 5, was not injured. The driver of the pickup truck perished in his vehicle and had not been identified, due to the severity of the blaze.

Christian said troopers will continue to comb the remains of the pickup truck, as most of its identifying information was destroyed by the flames.

Another fiery wreck on Nov. 3 at the intersection of Loop 1604 and New Sulphur Springs Road (F.M. 3432) in Adkins ended with two teenage girls being injured. According to Investigator Louis Antu of the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, 19-year-old Morgan Bryant of Cibolo was traveling east on Loop 1604 in a 2002 Toyota sedan at approximately 2:56 a.m., when the vehicle struck a traffic light pole before bursting into flames.

Bryant was transported via ambulance to the San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC) with non-life-threatening injuries, Antu said. Her passenger, identified as 17-year-old Selena Gonzales, suffered burns and was airlifted to University Hospital. Gonzales was later transferred to SAMMC.

Jenn Rodriguez, a SAMMC spokesman, did not return calls prior to press time. However, KENS 5-TV reported Nov. 5 that both teens were in critical condition.

All three crashes remain under investigation.
