1927-2012

Leonard Elo Ortmann answered the call from his Lord and Savior on Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, at the age of 85 years, 9 months, and 17 days. Leonard was born the second child to William and Lillie Wehman Ortmann on Jan. 16, 1927, in the Three Oaks community in Wilson County, Texas, where he grew up and attended Dewees School.

He was baptized on March 6, 1927, in the First Lutheran Church in Floresville and confirmed in the faith on March 29, 1942, in the St. John Lutheran Church in Poth. Leonard served two years in the U.S. Army, of which most of his time was spent in Germany.

On June 6, 1948, he married Marilyn Mosmeyer in the First Lutheran Church in Floresville. They lived and worked together on a farm in the Three Oaks community; there a son and daughter were born. In 1952, they bought a home in Floresville and Leonard went to work for Southern Pacific Railroad, due to the big drought, where he worked for 11 years. In 1963, he went back to full-time farming and ranching.

After living in Floresville for 31 years, he and his wife built a home on one of their farms in 1983 and moved back to the Three Oaks community. Leonard was active in the Floresville Volunteer Fire Department for 31 years, where he served as fire marshal for several years. He was active in his church, serving on the church council as chairperson a number of times, and also was active with the new addition and a member of the Church Brotherhood. In the early 1970s, the usher corps was formed. Leonard was appointed head usher of one of the teams and remained faithful until his health began to fail him. He was a member of the Wilson County Farm Bureau, serving as chairman and vice chairman several years; and he served on the Farm Service Agency committee as secretary, vice chairman, and chairman. He was a member of the Floresville Peanut Festival Association for several years, a lifetime member of the VFW Post 8555 in Poth, a member of the American Legion Post No. 38 in Floresville and Hermann Sons Lodge No. 272, Poth, and a member of Crime Stoppers since its beginning, resigning in 2008. He also served on the Ag Committee, the tax appraisal board, and Poth Young Farmers.

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, William “Bill” Ortmann; his sister, Lillian Ortmann Stahl Schultz; and two brothers-in-law, Harold Stahl and Harold Heimer.

He is survived by his wife of more than 64 years, Marilyn Ortmann; son Thomas Ortmann; daughter Barbara Ortmann Lohse and husband William; his sister, Luella Ortmann Heimer; his sister-in-law, Betty Ortmann; his grandchildren, Matthew Lohse and wife Jennifer, Ashley Ortmann Kennedy and husband Rev. Chris Kennedy, Mandi Lohse Fontenot and husband Robby, Karissa Ortmann, and Tyler Ortmann and wife Courtny; and his two great-grandsons, Tyce Henry Fontenot and Caleb Michael Kennedy.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the First Lutheran Church in Floresville co-officiated by the Rev. John Conrad and the Rev. Chris Kennedy.

Interment followed in the Dewees Cemetery in Wilson County.
