HALLETTSVILLE -- La Vernia is one step closer to competing in another regional tournament, as the Lady Bears knocked off Bellville last Thursday evening to win the area championship and advance to the regional quarterfinal round of competition.

La Vernia captured the District 28-3A title back on Oct. 23, as the Lady Bears defeated Sam Houston in their final regular-season game of the year. As the district champs, the Lady Bears earned a bye in the first round of the playoffs, and sat back as the No. 2 and 3 seeds from the region played each other.

Bellville picked up a 3-2 win over Smithville in the bi-district round of competition, but didn’t find the same success against La Vernia. The Lady Bears were a little slow during the early moments of the match, and fans caught a scare as La Vernia dropped the first set 25-12. Head Coach Theresa Reyes got her team motivated, though, and the Lady Bears came back to win a close second set, 25-23.

With things all tied up, the Lady Bears settled down a bit and began to play their game. La Vernia looked sharp in the third set of the competition, and picked up a quick 25-15 win. Needing just one more set to win the match, the Lady Bears kept the heat on Bellville and rolled their way to another 25-15 win for the match and area championship.

Senior Valarie Moehrig had an exceptional match up front for La Vernia, earning 20 kills and a whopping 10.5 blocks. Brooke Haliscak and Brittani Dear combined for another 20 kills. Dear also played great defense for the Lady Bears, pulling up 32 digs in the match.

La Vernia was scheduled to face the La Grange Leopards Nov. 6 in the regional quarterfinals, though results were unknown as of press time. La Grange made a perfect run through its district season to win the district title, and defeated Fredericksburg in straight sets to capture the area championship.

Results and information regarding any future matches will be posted to the Wilson County News website as they become available
