Nixon-Smiley falls to Natalia
NIXON -- It was an all-Mustang battle in Nixon last Friday night as the Natalia Mustangs rode into town to face the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs in a District 15-2A DII matchup. Unfortunately for the host team, however, the visitors from Natalia rode out of town with a 51-23 win.
The Mustangs actually got the evening’s scoring under way with a huge run from sophomore Tristan Newman early in the first quarter. Newman found an opening in the defense and scampered 79 yards for the score. Oscar Torres then booted the extra point, and the score was 7-0 with 7:45 to play in the first.
Natalia answered the touchdown nearly immediately with a 64-yard passing play. The extra point was no good, though, and the first quarter ended with the score at 7-6.
Natalia scored its second touchdown of the game with 4:44 to play in the half on a 15-yard run. Less than three minutes later, Nixon-Smiley scored on a 55-yard passing play from Edward Pena to Miguel Hernandez. Jared Van Auken ran in the 2-point conversion, and Nixon-Smiley took a 15-14 lead with 1:55 to play in the half.
Natalia quickly got down the field following the kickoff, and scored on a short run with 49 seconds remaining in the half. A good 2-point conversion made the score 24-15 in favor of Natalia at the break.
Natalia added to its lead early in the third quarter with a 10-yard touchdown run. Nixon-Smiley came back to score on another passing play, however, as Pena connected with Hernandez from 15 yards out. Newman ran in the 2-point conversion, and the score was 29-23 in favor of Natalia, with one quarter remaining.
The fourth quarter belonged entirely to Natalia, though, as the visiting Mustangs scored three additional touchdowns en route to a 51-23 win over Nixon-Smiley.
Natalia tallied 389 yards of offense on the ground, and threw in another 162 yards through the air. Meanwhile, Nixon-Smiley ran for 250 yards and threw for another 163 yards. Each team put the ball on the carpet once, but both recovered their own fumbles. There also were 20 penalties throughout the game.
Newman led the Nixon-Smiley running game with 156 yards on 13 carries, followed by Van Auken with 78 yards on 14 carries. Hernandez ran nine times for 15 yards.
Pena completed six of 11 passes during the game, connecting three times with Garrett Earlywine for 72 yards. Hernandez had a catch for 55 yards and a touchdown, Newman caught a pass for 20 yards, and Hernandez caught a pass for 16 yards and a score.
For Natalia, it was the team’s first win of the season. The teams both stand at 1-8 on the year, and 1-5 in district play.
The Nixon-Smiley Mustangs will close out their 2012 season this Friday, Nov. 6, as the team travels to Poth to face the 7-2 Pirates. Poth is coming off a big win over Dilley, and the Mustangs will have their hands full, to say the least. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Jack Lane Field.
