Poth 57
Dilley 42

DILLEY -- While the 57-42 score looks more like the result of a high school basketball game than a football game, the Poth Pirates were thrilled to return home with a convincing win over the Dilley Wolves, who previously had been unbeaten in District 15-2A DII play.

The barrage of scoring and domination by Poth began with an early defensive stand, as the Pirates held the Wolves deep in their own territory and ended up scoring a quick safety. The result was 2 points for Poth and the ball on a short field. The Pirates struck again nearly immediately, as senior running back Phillip Garza avoided the Dilley defense for 33 yards and a touchdown. Garza also ran in the 2-point conversion, and the Pirates led 10-0 with 7:10 to play in the first.

After another big defensive stand, Poth got the ball back and let sophomore sensation Thomas Krawietz do his thing. Krawietz found an opening in the Dilley defense and quickly exploited it for 69 yards and a score. Zach Lyssy booted the extra point for the Pirates, and the score was 17-0.

The Wolves finally woke up from there, and quarterback Will Urban took just 12 seconds off the clock as he capped off a very quick Wolves drive with a 64-yard run. The point-after attempt was no good, however, and the score stood at 17-6.

Early in the second quarter, the Pirates scored again, this time on a 4-yard run from Garza. Dilley immediately responded with a 29-yard touchdown run, and the score was 23-12. With seven minutes still remaining in the half, the Pirates went back to work, and quickly scored three more times.

Zach Lyssy scored on a 45-yard run with 6:15 to play in the half. He added the point-after kick, and the score was 30-12. The defense came up with a stop against Dilley and the offense went right back to work, eventually scoring on 2-yard touchdown run from Garza. The score was 37-12, but the Pirates wanted more, despite only having 22 ticks remaining on the clock. A quick recovery following the kickoff gave the Pirates one last chance to score, and a well-designed play from the sideline resulted in a 45-yard touchdown pass from Zach Lyssy to Blake Lyssy. Zach added the point-after kick, and the Pirates took a mammoth 44-12 lead into halftime.

Dilley made some good adjustments and showed progress in the third quarter by scoring 14 unanswered points. The Pirates came back strong in the fourth, however, and quickly hung 13 more on the board with a 24-yard touchdown run from Garza, and a 60-yard touchdown run by Krawietz. Zach Lyssy kicked one of the two extra points, and the Pirates led 57-26 with 6:39 to play in the game.

Dilley scored on its next possession, eventually getting it done through the air. The Pirate defense allowed one final touchdown to Dilley in the closing minute of the game, but it was far too little, as Poth rolled home with a big 57-42 win.

The Pirate running game was impressive throughout the night, as three different players turned in 100-yard games. Garza led the way with 176 yards on 23 carries, followed by Krawietz with 161 yards on 12 rushes. Zach Lyssy tacked on another 136 yards on just eight carries. Blake Lyssy ran four times for another 59 yards of offense. The Pirates only completed one pass during the game, but made it count for 45 yards and the touchdown from Zach to Blake.

The Pirate defense bent, but never broke throughout the game. Dilley racked up 535 total yards of offense, rushing for 291 yards and passing for another 244. The Pirates helped force three turnovers, though, and recovered all three.

The win lifts the Pirates to 7-2 on the year, and 5-1 in district play. It also brings up an interesting situation, with one game remaining in the regular season. While Poth will face Nixon-Smiley in the final game of the year, Dilley will square off with Karnes City. The Badgers are currently alone at the top of the district, but a Dilley win would create a three-way tie between Karnes City, Dilley, and Poth. No matter what, though, these three teams will advance to the playoffs.

The Pirates will host the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs this Friday, Nov. 9, at Jack Lane Field. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
