COLUMBUS -- After coming off a tough district season, and finishing as district runner-up, the Poth Pirettes are proving that they still have what it takes, as the team beat both Comfort and Hardin in straight sets during the first two rounds of Class 2A volleyball playoffs last week.

The Pirettes met the Comfort Deer in the first round and looked comfortable from the first set. Sophomore Alyssa Kallies recorded a match-high 10 kills, followed by Micah Weaver with 8. Strong serving by Amanda Wauters and Devon Dylla with 4 aces and 3 aces, respectively, kept the Comfort team from generating much offense. Shelby Yanta and Jordan Schneider were big in the backcourt with 17 and 13 digs, respectively. Weaver and Dylla led strong play at the net with 1.5 and 1 block, respectively. Wauters led the team with 21 assists, and Alyssa Kruse contributed another 12, as the Pirettes won in straight sets, 25-10, 25-16, and 25-20.

The Pirettes faced the Lady Hornets from Hardin in the Area Championship, and looked just as comfortable and strong in their first set, winning 25-7. The Pirettes won the second set in the same decisive manner by a score of 25-8. They seemed to lose some intensity in the third and were down 7-1, when the aggressive serving of Wauters brought the Pirettes back to life. They continued on to win the third set 25-19.

Weaver led the Pirettes with 8 kills, a game-high 14 digs, 2 aces, and a block. Wauters led the Pirettes with a game-high 16 assists, 5 aces, and 6 digs. Dylla led blocking with 2 blocks, while Yanta and Kallies each had half a block.

“The girls are playing well at the right time, but we still have a way to go,” said Poth Head Coach Patti Zenner.

The Pirettes will face Lago Vista in the regional quarterfinals match. Date, time, and location for the match were unknown as of press time, but will be posted to the Wilson County News website as they become available.
