About politics and other things

The elections are finally over and we can give thanks that we no longer have to endure the bombardment of ugly lies and negative campaigning night after night.

Nationally, the country is in a bit of a quandary, as nothing was settled by this election. The vote was essentially to give President Barack Obama another four years to try to accomplish what he was not able to accomplish in the first four years. If anything, the voters overwhelmingly approved the status quo.

After a long and bitter campaign, easily the most expensive in history, the country is right back where it was before the election.

Not so in Floresville.

A new day is dawning, with the election of a political newcomer, local businessman Jim Miller. Miller was elected to City Council, Place 1. Mario Morones was unopposed and will retain his seat in Place 2.

Diana Garza was elected mayor without a runoff. She was able to garner a clear majority of 853 votes in a hotly contested race against Johnnie Rene Gomez, Christina Jarzombek, and Tomas Robles.

Miller, Morones, and Garza ran an issues-oriented campaign, but nevertheless, with all the political rhetoric preceding the election, some healing must take place. Changes are needed, and this is what the campaign and the vote were all about.

This takes nothing from the previous council and its accomplishments, but going forward, there are major issues to be faced, including finances and water and sewer upgrades to accommodate a growing population.

The council has a full plate, as citizens have questions. All the answers will not be easy, but with a determination to do what is right and what is best for the city, we can go forward. Some tough choices will have to be made in order to get city finances in shape and be prepared for the growth that we can expect from the Eagle Ford shale.

The conversations begun during this last election need to continue. We must not be afraid to have healthy discussions about city business with friends and neighbors. The council will need to continue to hear from citizens, not in contentious outbursts but as an ongoing process. The city council cannot operate effectively in a vacuum.

Councilman Miller will be readily accessible to constituents from his business. Miller and his wife own and operate Photographs by Jim right in the middle of downtown on C Street. Mayor Diana Garza is a Realtor with Pat Brown Realtors at the main intersection of C and Third streets, making access easy and inviting.

This is a tough job that the council and mayor are about to assume, because they have their own businesses to manage. But they have indicated their willingness to do what it takes to fulfill their campaign promises to the people.

The voters in Floresville have spoken, but their obligation to the city is not over. There are committees to be filled, studies to be conducted, and plans for the future to be completed. All this will take the continued active involvement of those who voted to put this council in office.

Don’t say “no” when you are asked to volunteer. Step up to the plate and ask how you can do your part to continue to make Floresville the best little town that it can be.

You can start by attending the swearing-in ceremony of the mayor and her council on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 10:30 a.m. in City Hall, 1120 D Street. The public is invited.

I agree with Elaine. There is a new day dawning. But, it is dawning - slowly. The left over regime does not seem interested in transparency. I get the feeling "they" - do not want any citizen to question ... More ›

"A dancing horse..." I love it! Can you possibly imagine the prospect of the 'horse whisperer' as the president of the greatest, most powerful nation on earth ? Man, I'm glad the voters spoke.
