La Vernia Council adds credit card fees

LA VERNIA -- Community members in La Vernia may see a slight increase in their bills if they pay at City Hall with credit or debit cards.
The La Vernia City Council discussed the need for a credit card fee during the Nov. 8 regular council meeting.
According to Mayor Robert Gregory, the city paid around $5,672 last year in merchant card service fees. The city currently is charged 4 percent by the bank every time a card is swiped, and the fee is expected to increase.
Community members go to City Hall to pay water bills, fees for building and sign permits, and Floresville Electric Light & Power System bills; according to City Secretary/Treasurer Angela Cantu, many people pay with credit cards.
Gregory discussed implementing a fee with council members Randy Leonard, Bobby Richter, Eloi Cormier, and John Richter, and agreed that a $5 fee added to all bills paid with a credit card would be reasonable.
According to Cantu, the council also is in the process of obtaining an online bill-pay service so community members can pay their water bills online without the $5 credit card fee.
Although the council approved the fee, it will not take effect until a city ordinance is written and approved.
Also at the meeting, the council approved advertising for a city administrator.
The council also discussed the city’s well project and scheduled a workshop for Nov. 26 to discuss options to get the project back in motion.
