Truck smashes into bank
FLORESVILLE -- Police here believe an elderly driver mistook the accelerator for the brake pedal, which led to his Ford F-250 pickup truck smashing through the window of a Wells Fargo branch on U.S. 181 here at 12:08 p.m. Nov. 8.
Patrolman Eric Hutchinson of the Floresville Police Department identified the driver as 93-year-old Harold Christensen of Floresville. Hutchinson said Christensen claimed the truck “jumped out of gear,” causing the vehicle to drive over the wheel stop, over a curb, and through the window of bank Manager Aileen Jendrusch’s office. The officer said, however, that the driver had been involved in a similar incident at a nearby Sonic restaurant earlier this year.
No one was injured in the incident. Jendrusch said that while the intruding pickup truck left her office in disarray and pushed her desk 3 feet, she was not in the office at the time. The manager reported that she had just returned from a business meeting in San Antonio and had gone to a break room in the back of the building to have lunch.
“All I heard was a big crash,” Jendrusch said. “I ran out to the lobby and saw smoke, and there was the truck.”
“I thought you were in there,” said coworker Tiffany Hill.
Jendrusch believes it was divine intervention that prompted her to leave her office just moments before Christensen’s arrival.
“I would have been dead,” she said.
Hutchinson said that while Christensen was not charged, a report will be filed with the state’s Medical Advisory Board, which could result in his driving privilege being revoked.
