FLORESVILLE -- With the results of last week’s election, a new Floresville City Council has overwhelmingly swept into office.

Now, as the dust settles, the city will get back to basics, according to the new officials.

The newly elected city officials are scheduled to be sworn in Nov. 17 at 10:30 a.m., with a special meeting to follow.

Jim Miller, councilman-elect for Place 1, said that workshops will be proposed in an effort to focus on giving control of the city back to its people.

“This election was a mandate,” Miller said. “The people spoke loudly and clearly, saying that they want their city back. We intend to give it to them.”

The workshops will be geared at bringing the new council up to speed on Robert’s Rules of Order and the Texas Open Meetings Act, as well as the inner workings of the city of Floresville, such as the city charter.

“Hopefully, we will have the entire council present so everyone can hear the same thing at the same time,” Miller said. “Once everybody is up to speed, there will be a strategic planning workshop so that when the next regular meeting comes [after the workshops], we can hit the ground running.”

Councilman John Guerrero said healing the division that has plagued the city is important for Floresville to move forward.

“We need to get the city back together,” Guerrero said. “The focus needs to be on the city itself and not its officials. I feel as if the new council agrees that we must put the needs of the city first and listen to the will of the people on what they want to happen with their city. I am hopeful for the future.”

Mayor-elect Diana Garza said she believes it’s important for the citizens to have a say in the proceedings of their government.

“I look forward to working with the new council and staff to ensure that decisions are made for the betterment of the community,” Garza said. “All of us have set some lofty goals and we plan to work together with the citizens to achieve those goals.”
