FLORESVILLE -- The city council here will have a new look following a Nov. 6 election in which almost 39 percent of Floresville’s registered voters cast ballots.

Two-term incumbent Jesse Christopher Flores lost the Place 1 councilman seat to local businessman Jim Miller. Flores, who was elected to his first two-year term in 2008, received 599 votes in his re-election bid, to Miller’s 951 votes.

When Miller takes office later this month, he will join a council headed by a new mayor -- Diana Garza -- who received 853 votes and beat three other opponents vying to succeed Mayor Daniel Tejada. Because he already served three consecutive two-year terms, the city’s home-rule charter prohibits Tejada from seeking another mayoral term for six years.

Rounding out the group of mayoral candidates were Place 3 Councilman Johnnie R. Gomez with 406 votes, Christina Jarzombek with 176 votes, and Tomas Robles with 147 votes.

Returning to the council, however, is Place 2 Councilman Mario Morones. The two-term incumbent ran unopposed and received 1,219 votes.

Voters in Floresville also were asked to weigh in on the reauthorization of a quarter-cent sales tax for maintenance and repair of municipal streets. The tax, which first was approved in 2004, will continue, as the measure passed by a vote of 824-533.

In a separate election, roughly 10 percent of registered voters cast ballots in the race for Floresville Independent School District, single-member Place 1. This resulted in William “Bill” Meuth Jr. receiving 105 votes to Joel Odom’s 100 votes. Meuth’s predecessor, Tom Ray -- who held the office for a decade -- resigned and withdrew from the race Aug. 22.

This is what Tejada did to this community. He brought down other people with him. That is something he left off his "I Love Me" letter he sent out at the taxpayers' expense. I wonder what will happen to this minister ... More ›
