Lady Bears bumped from playoff picture
KYLE -- After winning District 28-3A, the Lady Bear volleyball team picked up a first-round bye in the playoffs, and then cruised into the regional quarterfinals with a 3-1 win over Bellville. Unfortunately for La Vernia, the team ran into La Grange last Tuesday evening in the quarterfinals, and was promptly bumped from postseason play.
La Vernia was slow coming out of the gate and never really recovered. The Lady Bears dropped the first set 25-12, and things were not looking good. La Vernia played a bit better in the second set of the match, scoring a few more points against La Grange, but still fell 25-18.
With a two sets lead, La Grange kept on the gas, and the Lady Bears tried in vain to keep pace. The match was over nearly as quickly as it had begun, and La Grange won the third set by the score of 25-11.
The loss was tough for La Vernia, but the team may take some comfort in knowing it had fallen to one of the best teams in Class 3A. As it turns out, the Leopards didn’t stop with the win over La Vernia, as La Grange went on to earn straight-sets wins over Port Isabel and Boerne en route to the Region IV title. The Leopards will advance to the state tournament.
During the Lady Bears’ match with La Grange, seniors Brittani Dear and Valarie Moehrig gave a good effort, earning 9 kills and 6 kills, respectively. Junior outside hitter Brooke Haliscak was held below her average at just 5 kills, and fellow junior Sara Hill registered just one kill.
Any loss is tough for competitors to take, so falling to La Grange wasn’t an easy pill to swallow. Still, the Lady Bears should take pride in the season they had, and use the experience they gained as they move forward.
“This was a good season for the Lady Bear volleyball team,” said Head Coach Theresa Reyes. “We were not only successful on the court, but through all the ups and downs, we built great team relationships.
“Our seniors will be missed, but La Vernia will continue to reload and work hard,” she added.
Reyes went on to thank the school and community for the support that was shown to the Lady Bears by all.
