Jaguars go down in region quarterfinal

BEEVILLE -- It ended a bit early for most, but the 2012 volleyball season was a huge success for the Floresville Jaguars. The team played a perfect district schedule to win the title, then picked up bi-district and area wins before eventually falling to Corpus Christi Flour Bluff in the regional quarterfinals last week.
The Jaguars were a bit slow to get going in the match against Flour Bluff, and that may have eventually led to the team’s undoing. Floresville managed just 12 points in the first set, falling 25-12 to start things out.
The Jaguars are a better team than that, though, and everyone knew it. Head Coach Reagan Curran refocused her team after the first set, and the Jags went toe-to-toe with Flour Bluff from there. The Hornets managed to hold on for the 25-22 set 2 win over the Jaguars, but it was a lot closer, and the match was not over just yet.
The third set proved to be even closer than the second, as only 2 points separated Floresville and Flour Bluff. The Hornets managed to once again pick up the win, but by the slimmest of margins at 25-23. The win moved Flour Bluff on to the regional tournament, while the loss ended Floresville’s season.
Senior Jamie Crowder led the Jags with 11 kills in the match, followed by fellow senior Melanie Reed with 7. Sarina Thompson, Krystin Coldewey, and JoLynn Castro combined for another 9. Michaela Sifuentes tallied 25 assists during the contest, and senior Sonja Tweeten led the team with 13 digs on defense.
The Jags’ year may be over, but they have a lot to look back on and be proud of. Floresville finished the year with an overall record of 26-18, and the team went 14-0 in district play to grab the 29-4A title. Crowder, Reed, and Tweeten are the only seniors on the team, and Floresville will return a talented group next season, with their sights set on advancing even farther in the playoffs.
