Falls City Beavers blow out Yellowjackets to win district
Falls City senior Cameron Soto scores one of his three touchdowns on the night. Soto had 165 rushing yards on 16 carries, and completed 13 passes for another 227 yards. The Beavers accumulated 537 yards of offense as they defeated the Runge Yellowjackets 46-0 last Friday night to win the District 14-1A DII title.
Falls City 46
FALLS CITY -- On paper, it appeared as though it would be a tight game in Falls City last Friday night. The two-loss Beavers were set to host the one-loss Runge Yellowjackets in the final regular-season game of the year. The teams were both unbeaten in district play, and the crown was headed to whichever team pulled out the win. It was close on paper, but in reality, the Beavers were far too much for the Yellowjackets, and dismantled the visiting team with a 46-0 thrashing in Falls City.
The Beavers have a ton of offensive weapons at their disposal, and five different players got in on the scoring action last Friday night. The team moved the ball on the ground and through the air, and finished the evening with a total of seven touchdowns.
Quarterback Cameron Soto is the team’s leader down in Falls City, and the senior led by example against Runge. Soto led the team in rushing yardage with 165, and led the team in scoring with three touchdowns. Fellow seniors Jon Swierc and Cody Jendrusch each ran for touchdowns, as well. Junior Stephen Harlos ran in a touchdown against the Yellowjackets, and junior receiver Dean Gaskamp scored the team’s lone touchdown through the air.
The game was an example of complete domination by Falls City. Those looking for a close game were likely disappointed, and fans from Runge were surely left in a state of shock. In addition to the Beaver offense that put up 299 yards of offense on the ground, and another 238 yards through the air, Falls City has an incredible defense that absolutely shut down the team from Runge.
The Yellowjackets were not only held scoreless throughout the short contest, but were beaten on both ends of the field on nearly every play. The Beaver defense, led by Eric Wiatrek’s 16 tackles, also earned a sack and an interception, and recovered four different Yellowjacket fumbles to kill Runge drives. Tyler Malcolm played a good game for Falls City with 15 tackles, and Austen Camber and Colton Beam each picked up another 10. Jendrusch had nine tackles on the night. In addition to these athletes, 12 additional players earned tackles on the night.
In addition to the offense put up by Soto, Kendall Kanak had a good game with 56 yards on six carries, and Jendrusch ran once for 46 yards and a touchdown. Soto looked good through the air, tossing 13 completions in 20 attempts for 227 yards. Gaskamp was Soto’s favorite target of the night, as the junior reeled in four passes for 126 yards. Harlos also caught four passes for 45 yards.
The win gives the Beavers an 8-2 record for the season, and a perfect 4-0 mark in district play. Falls City will now enjoy a bye in the first round of the playoffs, and will return to action next week against the winner of the game between Sabinal and Charlotte. Game date, location, and time will be posted on the Wilson County News website as it becomes available.
