Pirates blank Mustangs on their way to playoffs

POTH -- The Poth Pirates welcomed the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs to Jack Lane Field last Friday night for the final regular-season game of the 2012 high school football season. It was not a very hospitable welcome, though, as the Pirates ended District 15-2A DII play with a 40-0 pounding of the Mustangs.
For several Pirate seniors, it would be the last football game played in front of a home crowd. It would not be the last game of the season, though, as the victory guaranteed a spot in the Class 2A playoffs, and a chance at the coveted Texas high school football championship.
No Pirate player had spent more time under the lights of Jack Lane Field than four-year starting running back Phillip Garza, and it did not take long for Garza to display what he had learned over the years. After having a 39-yard touchdown run called back on a penalty, Garza again accepted the handoff and went back to work. Following the excellent blocking of the offensive line, and breaking tackles in the secondary, Garza sprinted his way 30 yards for the first score of the evening with 6:41 left in the first quarter. Fellow senior Zach Lyssy added the point-after kick, and the Pirates had all the lead they needed at 7-0.
Particularly impressive was yet another outstanding defensive showing by the Pirates. Holding the Mustangs to only nine first downs and 136 total offensive yards, Garza and the Pirate offense had plenty of opportunities of which they would take advantage.
Garza would finish his final home game with 168 rushing yards on only 12 carries, and added two more scores from 23 and 14 yards, respectively. Lyssy would also impress the home crowd in his final regular-season game with 130 yards on six carries, including a 17-yard second-quarter score.
The ferocious defense led by Garza, Lyssy, and fellow senior Craig Kilgore never allowed the Mustang offense any momentum. Sophomore quarterback Thomas Krawietz and junior running back Blake Lyssy would add touchdown runs to the blowout, as Head Coach Andrew King and the Pirates finished off yet another extraordinary regular season with an overall record of 8-2, and a 6-1 mark in district play.
For Nixon-Smiley, the season ends with an overall record of 1-9, and a district mark of 1-6. Jared Van Auken led the Mustang offense against Poth with 46 rushing yards, followed by Tristan Newman with 39.
With the district champion Karnes City Badgers defeating the Dilley Wolves, Poth secured second place in District 15-2A and a trip to the playoffs. The second season will start for the Pirates this Friday night, Nov. 16, as they travel to George West to face the Taft Greyhounds in bi-district play. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
