La Vernia Bears fall to Bulldogs in Somerset, still reach postseason
Bear defenders line up across from Somerset during La Vernia’s Nov. 9 loss to the Bulldogs. Somerset went on to win the District 28-3A title, while La Vernia finished third to grab the district’s final playoff spot.

SOMERSET -- It wasn’t the way the Bears wanted to end the regular season, but despite the team’s 27-3 loss to the Somerset Bulldogs, La Vernia will play again this Friday after advancing into the first round of the playoffs.
Somerset, led by sophomore quarterback Koy Detmer Jr., struck first in the game on a 35-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. The Bulldogs also managed a field goal just before halftime, and led the Bears by the score of 10-0 at the break.
La Vernia came out strong in the second half, though, and drove down into field-goal territory. Senior Alec Dews booted one from 38 yards out, and the gap was back to 7, as the Bears trailed 10-3. Detmer got the Bulldogs rolling from there, though, tossing a pair of 20-yard touchdowns, and putting Somerset on top of La Vernia, 24-3.
Somerset went on to add a second field goal in the fourth quarter, and while La Vernia showed the ability to move the ball at times, the Bears were unable to score again, leaving the final score at 27-3.
The Bear offense was fairly balanced in its attack, but the team really struggled to find success from either angle. La Vernia ran the ball a total of 35 times for 88 yards, and threw 20 times, though the Bears completed just five passes for 79 yards.
Jevante Anderson carried most of the load for La Vernia, earning 49 yards on 17 carries. Levi Andrews ran twice for 29 yards, and Colby Sims and Matthew Montgomery combined for another 10 yards. Sims completed five passes, but was also picked off three times. Dews was the Bears’ leading receiver with three catches for 60 yards, and Jose Sahagun caught two more for 19 yards. The Bears lost two fumbles during the game. It certainly wasn’t La Vernia’s best showing, but give the Bulldog defense credit for finding ways to stop a versatile Bear offense.
La Vernia’s defense has been a bright spot throughout the season, and the Bears played well again against the Bulldogs. La Vernia held Detmer to just five of 10 passing attempts, and also picked off a pass from the young talent.
The loss puts the Bears at 4-6 on the year, and 2-2 in district play. Breaking even in District 28-3A was enough to make the playoffs, though, as La Vernia finishes in third place behind No. 1 Somerset and No. 2 Pleasanton.
The Bears will now move into the postseason, where they will face the Wimberley Texans in the first round of the playoffs. The bi-district game is set for this Friday, Nov. 16, in La Vernia. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Bear Stadium.
