East Central 40

C.C. King 10

CORPUS CHRISTI -- After a healthy 40-10 win over the King Mustangs last Thursday evening in Corpus Christi, the East Central Hornets are poised to make another solid run into the playoffs this year.

In yet another Thursday night game, the Hornets showed their ability to dominate opponents, and controlled the game from beginning to end. With 21 first-half points and another 19 in the second half, East Central paced its way to the team’s seventh victory of the season.

The Hornets got things going in the first quarter with an 18-yard touchdown through the air, as junior quarterback Jeremy Jones connected with Dustin Toscano. Dalton Zigman kicked the extra point for the Hornets, and the score was 7-0 early on. The Mustangs came back to kick a field goal and cut the Hornets’ lead to 4, but things were about to change in the second quarter.

Junior running back Johnathan Jackson has had a great season, and the powerful north-south runner added to his stats with a pair of rushing touchdowns in the first half. His first touchdown run came from 29 yards out, and his second was good from the 36-yard line. Zigman booted both extra points. The East Central defense held King from scoring again in the first half, and the Hornets went to the locker room with a 21-3 advantage.

In the third quarter of play, Jackson earned his third rushing touchdown of the game with a 23-yard sprint from scrimmage. The point-after attempt was no good, but the lead was 27-3, and things weren’t looking good for the Mustangs.

Senior Hornet running back Chris Armstrong, who missed much of the season with an injury, capped off a fourth-quarter scoring drive for East Central as he ran into the end zone from 7 yards out. The Hornets went for 2 on the conversion, but came up a bit short. Still, East Central led 33-3.

The Mustangs eventually scored their lone touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter on a short 4-yard passing play. The extra point made the score 33-10, but King was hardly a threat by this point in the game.

Still, the Hornets didn’t let up much, and East Central’s offense tacked on a little insurance before the final buzzer sounded. The team’s sixth touchdown of the night was courtesy of Jacorey Armstrong, as he broke through the King defense for 47 yards and the touchdown. Zigman added the point-after, and East Central celebrated a convincing 40-10 win over King.

Jackson led the Hornet rushing game with 145 yards on 12 carries. Chris Armstrong got 92 yards on 18 touches, and Caid Franckowiak added another 52 yards on eight carries. Jacorey Armstrong ran twice for 50 yards, Matt Coleman had two carries for 13 yards, Jeremy Jones had a carry for 7 yards, and Christian Jones ran twice for 4 yards.

Through the air, Christian Jones completed three of four passing attempts for 23 yards, as younger brother, Jeremy, completed one of three passing attempts for 18 yards and a touchdown. Toscano led the receivers with 18 yards, while Wanya Ward had a catch for 9 yards, Vernest Dotson had a catch for 8 yards, and Justin Organ caught one for 6 more.

The Hornet defense played another outstanding game, as well, holding the Mustangs to 135 total yards. King picked up just 75 yards of rushing offense on 35 attempts, and completed just 7 of 22 passing attempts for 60 yards.

With the win, the Hornets finish the regular season at 7-3, and were 4-1 in district play. East Central finishes second in District 28-5A, with the team’s one loss coming at the hands of the Steele Knights.

The Hornets will now shift their focus to the playoffs, and will spend the week preparing for the Clark Cougars. The teams will meet this Friday, Nov. 16, at Heroes Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
