SAN ANTONIO -- It was an up-and-down season for the Poth Pirette volleyball team in 2012. The team had its share of wins and losses, but still played well enough to reach the playoffs, and make a run to the Region IV final.

After knocking off Comfort and Hardin in the first two rounds of the playoffs, the Pirettes faced a huge obstacle last Tuesday night as Poth squared off with the then No. 1-ranked team, Lago Vista. The Pirettes did their homework, prepared well for the match, and knocked off the state’s top team in four sets. The Pirettes easily won the first set by the score of 25-15, but then stumbled in the second as they fell 25-12. Head Coach Patti Zenner refocused her team in the third, and cruised to a 25-16 win. With just one game left to win, Poth dominated again, earning another 25-16 win to advance to the regional tournament. Micah Weaver led the team in kills with 15, followed by Alyssa Kallies with 13.

The Pirettes were matched up with George West in the regional semifinals last Friday afternoon. The Lady Horns came out strong in the first set of the match, and narrowly topped the Pirettes by the score of 25-23. Poth came roaring back in the second set, however, stunning George West with a 25-13 win. With things all tied up, Poth played with purpose in the third set to win 25-12. The Lady Horns made things a bit closer in the fourth, but still couldn’t stop the Pirettes, and eventually fell to Poth, 25-19, giving the Pirettes a rematch with Schulenburg for the region title.

Poth and Schulenburg had split matches during the district season. As the top two teams in 29-2A, they played from opposite ends of the playoff bracket, but still emerged as the best two teams in Region IV. It was a hard-fought match on both sides of the court, but in the end, it was Schulenburg with the win and the trip to the state tournament.

Schulenburg won a close first set by the score of 26-24. The team then jumped on Poth in the second set, winning 25-17, and putting the Pirettes on their heels. Poth came back strong in the third set to win 25-20, and was looking to tie things up with a set-four win. The teams went into “overtime” again, though, and Schulenburg held on for the win, 27-25, ending Poth’s playoff run.

Weaver led the team in kills with 20, as well as digs with 26. Amanda Wauters racked up 30 assists, and Kallies tallied 1.5 blocks at the net.

For Poth, it was a rare exit from the playoffs at the regional level. The Pirettes finished the year with an overall record of 29-20, and were 10-2 in district play, finishing second to Schulenburg.
