According to Merriam-Webster, the definition of “volunteerism” is the act or practice of doing volunteer work in community service.

I find this word very interesting as to how it applies to our quality of life in our community. I’m sure you’re wondering why I bring this up, and clearly I say this with some certainty, that we all like where we live, and volunteerism is a big reason for that. So many functions and events are put together by a fantastic group of organizations that are volunteer-based. Our neighbors giving of their time for the betterment of our community!

The volunteers work through organizations here in the La Vernia area like the Lions Club, the La Vernia Parks Foundation, the La Vernia Chamber, the La Vernia Historical Society, the La Vernia Greater Chamber of Commerce, the La Vernia Foundation for the Arts, the La Vernia Little League, the LV Angels, the LV Garden Club, Shoestring Productions, our volunteer fire department and EMS, and our many churches in the community!

Without the “volunteerism,” our quality of life here I think would be much different! Not to be forgotten is the fantastic cooperation with the La Vernia Independent School District and its dedicated staff of professionals who are so generous with their time and allowing use of facilities that enhances the city’s ability to host the many events that take place here.

I’m sure that if you’re reading this and you have time and talents to offer, any one of these organizations would love to have you join in. Please contact our City Secretary Angela Cantu at City Hall and she can get you in contact with the organization of your liking.

So many great things are happening in La Vernia and it’s with the help of these volunteer groups that are making it happen. So to all of you, I, our city council, and city staff say “thank you for all you do!”

Till next month, God bless.

Robert Gregory is the mayor of La Vernia.
