Residents from Virginia to Massachusetts are being affected by what they call “Superstorm Sandy.” The winds of this storm not only affected the coastal states such as Delaware, New Jersey, and New York, they also stretched from North Carolina all the way up to Maine. According to CNN forecasters, an “extremely dangerous storm surge” hit around the same time as high tide, with the highest storm surge along the coasts of New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut. The immediate impact of this consisted of coastal flooding and beach erosion.
The residents of these coastal states took precautions such as boarding up doors and windows, turning their refrigerators to the coldest setting in case of power outage, filling a bathtub with water, getting a full tank of gas in one car, and possibly turning off the electricity, gas, and water for the residence.
This is such a drastic change that these people are going through, the stress of it all is unbearable and they need all the help they can get. There are many different organizations along the East Coast that are providing shelter, food, and many other supplies to the victims of Hurricane Sandy.
One way to help these distressed people is by donating to the Red Cross. The donations will provide food, shelter, emotional support, and other assistance to those affected by the storm. According to ABC News, close to 100 Red Cross blood drives were canceled because of Sandy, so blood supplies are low in the areas affected the most. The Red Cross asks that those who can donate to schedule an appointment to give blood. Another organization is the Salvation Army, which has dozens of mobile feeding units and shelters along the East Coast that are working to serve thousands in the most heavily hit areas.
It is so good that all these organizations are coming together as one to help people in need. No matter where you are in this world, you can help make it just a little better for those affected by Sandy.
