Poth trustees talk cracked track
POTH -- Discussion regarding the cracked surface of the Poth Independent School District (ISD) track consumed a majority of the district’s Nov. 12 board of trustees meeting.
This was perhaps the most-discussed item on Monday night’s agenda, addressing repairs that will have to be made eventually to the running track around the school’s football field. Due to a lack of moisture underneath the track itself, cracks have developed.
If the track were to be completely replaced now, the project would cost a total of $153,000; however, the track would have to be resurfaced in five years for a further $86,000. This entire process would have to be repeated again in 12 years, the trustees heard.
Discussion highlighted that without a proper irrigation system to hydrate the underlying soil, the cracks will appear again as they have now, three years since the last resurfacing.
Unable to come to a full agreement on the effectiveness of another resurfacing project without a sprinkler system to maintain the fix, the board agreed to draft an interlocal contract with a buy board from which a company can be selected to do the project without putting out a bid.
Also during the meeting, the trustees received a detailed report on the audit of the district’s finances from Michael Kieschnick of Corpus Christi-based Lovvorn & Kieschnick LLP.
The firm’s overall assessment is that the district’s finances “present fairly according to generally accepted accounting principles in the U.S.” The board accepted the audit and its findings.
Also, after much deliberation concerning the selection of an architect to develop the science/Life Skills classrooms, a firm was selected upon a recommendation from Superintendent Scott Caloss. SHW, a company based in San Antonio, was approved to head the project.
In other business, the board discussed and approved a change to the district’s organization chart. The district athletic director will report to the superintendent in the future, and not to the high school principal. The board heard this is a practical solution, as the athletic director’s responsibilities extend beyond the high school.
