Floresville 21

Port Lavaca-Calhoun 48

CORPUS CHRISTI -- A late-game rally wasn’t enough to bring the Tigers back from a 14-point deficit, which began in the first quarter, as Floresville’s playoff hopes were dashed last Friday night when they suffered a 48-21 loss to the Port Lavaca Calhoun Sandcrabs.

It would be the Sandcrabs who controlled the tempo of the game with their rushing attack, as 446 of their 496 yards of offense came on the ground.

Throughout the season, the Tigers had been consistent in grinding away clock time, utilizing the dual rushing threat of Hector Villegas and Ruben Benavides. But the Tigers were only able to amass 176 yards on the ground against a Sandcrab defense that is state-ranked.

The Sandcrabs would reach the end zone four times without a Tiger response before Ruben Benavides pounded in a 7-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, which brought the score to 27-7 with 4:04 remaining in the half.

Port Lavaca would again reach the end zone with 11 seconds left before halftime to bring its lead to 34-7.

As the second half opened up, it appeared as if the Sandcrabs were firmly in control of the game, as they dropped a pair of touchdowns on the Tigers in the third quarter, which brought the score to 48-7.

But the Tigers gritted their teeth and fought back as the third quarter came to a close and quarterback Colby Shodrock found John Handowski on a 64-yard pass into the end zone.

The Tigers scored again in the fourth quarter on a 5-yard dash by Hector Villegas to bring the final score to 48-21, ending the Tigers’ 2012 season.

Shodrock went 6 of 10 throwing the ball, for 98 yards and one touchdown. Notable receivers were Handowski with two catches for 72 yards, Benavides with one grab for 7 yards, Cainan Payne with two catches for 14 yards, and Aaron Laskowski with one catch for 5 yards.

T+he Tiger rushing game was led by Villegas, who ran 24 times for 139 yards. Other notable rushers were Benavides, who went 34 yards on 10 carries, and Gilbert Ortiz, who carried the ball once for 3 yards.

The Tigers end their season with an overall record of 8-3, and the team was 6-1 in district play. Floresville earned a share of the District 29-4A title in the process.

The Tigers will be hit hard by graduation in the spring, but do have a number of sophomores and juniors who will return with some valuable playing experience, many of whom play in key skill positions.
