Wimberley 20

La Vernia 0

LA VERNIA -- In a Class 3A rematch from two months earlier, the La Vernia Bears played host to the Wimberley Texans during a bi-district playoff game last Friday night. Unfortunately for the Bears, the result was nearly the same, as Wimberley skipped town with a 20-0 win.

Defensive battles are commonplace between these two teams, and nothing had changed as of last Friday. Both have the ability to make big plays on offense, but it is the team’s defenses that deserve much of the credit.

The Texans scored their first points of the game midway through the first quarter of play on a 16-yard passing play from Reed Jones to Kolby Kelley. Kelley then ran in from a yard out with just under 11 minutes to play in the half, and repeated the feat with three minutes to play in the first half. One of the three point-after attempts was no good, however, and Wimberley held a 20-0 lead at the break, a score that would prove final by game’s end.

The Bear offense worked primarily from the ground, but did go to the air 12 times to mix things up. Junior quarterback Colby Sims completed three of 11 passing attempts for 25 yards, while Vince Gill connected on his one pass of the game to Levi Andrews for 16 yards. Alec Dews had two catches for 24 yards, and Rudy Mendoza had one grab good for 1 yard.

Matthew Montgomery led the Bear ground game, but managed just 36 yards on nine carries. Jevante Anderson ran eight times for another 29 yards. Gill picked up 9 yards on four carries, Sims got 5 yards on seven carries, Adam Alcorta was good for 5 yards on two touches, and Andrews ran once for 3 paces.

The loss ends the Bears’ 2012 season with an overall record of 4-7. La Vernia was 2-2 in district play. The team will definitely miss some seniors next year, but the vast majority of the team is made up of juniors and underclassmen, meaning the Bears will return a high level of experience in 2013.
