Pirates pound on Taft, advance to area game
Senior running back Phillip Garza (7) of Poth shakes off a Taft defender during the Pirates’ lopsided victory over the Greyhounds. Garza ran for 330 yards during the bi-district matchup.
GEORGE WEST -- “You know what they’re gonna do, but you still can’t stop ’em.”
If ever there was a time that this expression was true, it was during last Friday night’s 62-26 thrashing of Taft by Poth. The game was a bi-district playoff meeting, and the Pirates made quick work of the Greyhounds.
Poth threw the ball just two times against Taft, connecting on one of the passes for 3 yards. On the ground, however, the Pirates pounded the ball 43 times against the Greyhounds, earning a staggering 664 rushing yards. Poth scored six touchdowns in the first half alone, and held a 41-7 lead at the break. Three additional Poth touchdowns came in the second half, giving the Pirates a total of nine touchdowns on the night. Yes, nine!
As one might expect, senior running back Phillip Garza led the way for Poth. What fans might not have expected is that Garza averaged more than 23 yards per carry, a seemingly unthinkable number -- especially in the playoffs. Garza ended the night with a total of 330 yards rushing and five touchdowns on just 14 carries. And, that one Pirate catch for 3 yards -- that was Garza, too.
Sophomore quarterback Thomas Krawietz also had a great game for Poth, as he averaged nearly 17 yards per carry, running for 169 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries. Blake Lyssy ran twice for 33 yards, Zach Lyssy ran six times for 29 yards and a touchdown, and Koby Pruski had one carry for 2 yards. Sean Clancy earned 94 yards and a touchdown on nine touches, and Luciano Zavala ran once for 9 yards.
With the big playoff win under their belts, the Pirates will now shift their focus to Lexington.
The Eagles picked up a bye during the bi-district round after winning District 14-2A DII with a 6-0 run though district opponents. The team’s overall record is 8-2, having given up losses to Cameron Yoe and Navasota back in September.
The Eagles are a fairly balanced team, working a healthy mix of passing into their game. Lexington quarterback Kogan Garrett was predicted as the preseason district MVP, and he hasn’t disappointed this year.
The Pirates will face Lexington this Friday, Nov. 23, at Bob Shelton Stadium in Buda. It will be an early game, with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
