Downtown SA commuters asked to plan ahead due to increased traffic on November 29 & 30
Commuters traveling in and out of the downtown area on Thursday and Friday, November 29 and 30, during morning and afternoon drive times are advised to plan ahead because of increased traffic volume expected in the area due to an all-day seminar being held at the Alamodome.
Commuters are encouraged to leave early to provide ample time to arrive at their destination and, if necessary, find parking in the downtown area. From 4,000 to 6,000 additional vehicles are expected to be using area highways, primarily IH-37 and IH-35 in an out of downtown, as well as parking in public and private facilities near the Alamodome to attend the Success 2012 Seminar.
The additional volume of vehicles is expected to have a significant impact on morning and afternoon traffic. City traffic officials not only encourage commuters to allow for extra travel time, but to also consider riding the bus, carpooling or seeking alternate routes into the central business district in order to reduce the number of vehicles on downtown highways.
The seminar begins at 8:00 a.m. However, doors at the Alamodome willopen at 6:45 a.m., meaning traffic congestion on area highways and streets is likely to begin earlier than normal. The seminar ends at 4:45 p.m. and increased traffic out of downtown is expected for the afternoon drive as well.
As many as 8,000 people are expected to attend each day of the seminar. They will utilize downtown public and private parking facilities near the dome, reducing the number of spaces normally available for citizens who work or do business in the central business district. A limited number of spaces are available in the dome’s parking lots.
City traffic officials will implement a plan to help accommodate theincreased traffic expected to enter the downtown area and fill streets near the Alamodome. Signs will be stationed on highways to provide information and direction to motorists as they near the downtown area. Police officers alsowill assist with traffic control.
