FLORESVILLE -- Three area teens face charges after a call about suspicious activity led officers to marijuana.

Sgt. Devin Keen of the Floresville Police Department said someone called police at approximately 9:10 p.m. Nov. 21 to report suspicious activity and vehicles at the rear of the River Bend golf course in Floresville. When Keen and Floresville Patrolman Matt Redd arrived, they found Blake Anthony Popham of Floresville and Jake Lane Sammons of La Vernia, both 17, who both “reeked of marijuana,” Keen said.

There also was marijuana in plain view in the teens’ vehicles, which led police to obtain consent to search the cars. This led to each teen being arrested and charged with possession of less than 2 ounces of marijuana. Both vehicles were towed from the scene and the teens were transported to the Wilson County Jail. Both Popham and Sammons were released after each posting $2,000 bond.

During the teens’ arrest, Keen said Popham’s cellular telephone was receiving text messages from someone mentioning that they had additional marijuana to sell. Officers responded to the messages and arranged a controlled drug buy.

On Nov. 22, at the corner of Chaparral and A streets, Keen and Redd arrested 19-year-old Santino Gonzales of Floresville. Gonzales then led police to his home, where they recovered more than 3 ounces of marijuana, scales, and pipes. He was charged with possession of more than 2 ounces, but less than 4 ounces of marijuana. Gonzales was later released from the Wilson County Jail after posting $4,000 bond.

Popham, a senior at Floresville High School, also is King Reboog LXVIII of the Floresville Peanut Festival’s Court of America’s Majestic Beauty.

Keen said police will obtain a warrant to mine additional data from Popham’s telephone, which could lead to other suspects being charged.
