FLORESVILLE -- A San Antonio truck driver has been cited for failure to control speed after his rig struck three vehicles just before 7:30 a.m. Nov. 26 at the intersection of F.M. 775 and U.S. 181 north of here.

Trooper Anthony Flores of the Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol said John Contreras was traveling southbound on U.S. 181 in a Peterbilt semi tractor, hauling a trailer carrying a load of gravel. Because of dense fog, Contreras allegedly was unable to see the traffic stopped at the intersection.

When he finally saw the vehicles, Flores said Contreras allegedly attempted to veer to the shoulder, but struck a Mercury Tracer sedan driven by Zelma Hoyt of Floresville, a Honda Pilot driven by Matthew Honeycutt of San Antonio -- both of which were stopped at the intersection -- and a Chevrolet Malibu driven by Barbara Corpus of Adkins, which was turning right onto F.M. 775.

Honeycutt and Corpus both were transported via ambulance to the Connally Memorial Medical Center in Floresville, Flores said. A hospital spokesman said both were treated and released.

Contreras and Hoyt received minor injuries, and were not transported.

Flores said Contreras’ tractor-trailer, which is owned by San Antonio-based Armando Auyon Trucking, underwent a Level 1 inspection following the crash. The vehicle was placed out of service for its brakes being out of alignment.

Its not that they can't stop. Its a strategy. Perhaps 1 truck might be going too fast, but not such that all 3 would have to run the light. In any case, the light is easy to see in time to prepare. I've seen them train ... More ›

Twice recently, I could have been run over by a gravel truck at that intersection. The first time, had I taken off to make my left turn when my light turned green it would have been over for us for sure. That trucker never even ... More ›
