Poth Pirates fall to Lexington Eagles in area playoff
BUDA -- They made it a close game into the fourth quarter, but the Poth Pirates eventually fell to the Lexington Eagles 42-25 last Friday afternoon during an area championship game in Buda.
After knocking off Taft 62-26 in the bi-district round of the playoffs, the Pirates advanced to the area game, where they squared off with Lexington, the winners of District 14-2A DII.
Lexington got on the board first with a 9-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter. The point-after was good, and the Eagles led 7-0. The Pirates responded, though, as senior running back Phillip Garza got past the Eagle defense for 22 yards and a touchdown. The point-after attempt was no good, however, and Lexington maintained the lead, 7-6.
The Eagle offense went back to work, and soon found itself inside Pirate territory. Lexington eventually capped off the drive with a 7-yard passing play, giving it a 14-6 advantage following the point-after kick. The Eagles went on to add to the scoreboard midway through the second quarter, as quarterback Kogan Garrett connected with London Jacobs from 30 yards out. The point-after was good, and the advantage was 21-6 for Lexington.
With halftime rapidly approaching, the Pirate offense went back to work and moved swiftly on the Eagles. Poth eventually scored its second touchdown of the game on a 4-yard run from senior Zach Lyssy. The Pirates went for the 2-point conversion, but came up short, leaving the score at 21-12.
Lexington didn’t have a lot of time on the clock, but moved the ball quickly and added another rushing touchdown from 8 yards out on a quarterback keeper. The extra point made the score 28-12 at the break, and Poth was facing an uphill battle if it was going to get back into the game.
In the second half, though, Poth struck first, scoring on a 4-yard run by Garza to make it a 28-18 game. The Pirates soon added another touchdown, this time on a 46-yard passing play from sophomore quarterback Thomas Krawietz to Lyssy. Dillon Zaiontz kicked the extra point for Poth, and the score stood at 28-25, putting the Pirates right back in the game.
The Pirate defense did its best to hold the potent Eagle offense at bay, but midway through the fourth quarter, Lexington added to its lead with an 8-yard touchdown run. A few minutes later, the Eagles scored again by running the ball in from 10 yards out. Lexington held a 42-25 advantage with only a few minutes to play in the game, and held on for the eventual win.
The loss ends the Pirates’ 2012 season with an overall record of 9-3. Poth finished as the runner-up in District 15-2A DII, and won a bi-district title before exiting the playoffs. Poth will graduate a number of key players in the spring, but still has several players returning in skill positions. The Pirates find a way to reload every year, and it seems unlikely that the 2013 season will be any different.
