East Central 0

Madison 24

SAN ANTONIO -- The score proved much lower than when the two teams met in the playoffs a year ago, but in the end, the result was the same. The Madison Mavericks continue in the playoffs, and the East Central Hornets see their season come to an end with a final score of 24-0.

The Hornets have had their share of offensive struggles this season, and East Central had a hard time getting anything going last Friday evening at Comalander Stadium. The Hornets ran the ball 46 times against a talented Madison defense, but managed just 171 rushing yards. The Black and Gold tried to mix things up a bit as well, making 13 passing attempts on the night, but senior quarterback Christian Jones completed just one pass to Brett Casey for 7 yards. He was also intercepted once.

On the other hand, the Mavericks found ways to score during the first half of play and rode the early lead throughout the game.

The first Madison touchdown came in the closing minutes of the first quarter on a 39-yard run by Marquis Warford. Then, with 9:06 to play in the half, Galen McAllister carried one over the goal line from a yard out. Warford went on to add an 11-yard touchdown run with 2-1/2 minutes to play in the half, and the Mavericks took a 21-0 lead into the locker room. Madison later added a 30-yard field goal about midway through the fourth quarter, and it proved to be more than enough to keep the Hornets at bay.

East Central senior running back Chris Armstrong, who missed much of the season with an injury, helped the Hornets to 42 yards on 10 carries, and junior Johnathan Jackson tallied 71 yards for East Central on 18 touches. Christian Jones had 34 yards on the ground, and younger brother, Jeremy Jones, ran for another 24 yards.

The Hornets finished their 2012 season with an overall record of 8-4. East Central finished second in District 28-5A behind the Steele Knights, and knocked off Clark two weeks ago to earn a bi-district victory.

The Hornets will lose more than half of their varsity roster to graduation, but will have several players who had stellar seasons in 2012 returning for another year.
