Members of the 2012 Falls City Beaver football team take the field prior to their Nov. 23 win over Sabinal. Falls City will next face Woodsboro in a region semifinal.
Falls City 33
SAN ANTONIO -- After enjoying a first-round bye in the playoffs, the Falls City Beavers returned to action last Friday evening, as they took on the Sabinal Yellowjackets in the area championship. Falls City ran away with the first half, and locked up a 33-0 win to advance to regional playoffs.
The Beavers’ first touchdown of the game came at the midpoint of the first quarter as senior quarterback Cameron Soto connected with Dean Gaskamp for 31 yards and a touchdown. Cody Jendrusch booted the point-after kick, and Falls City enjoyed a 7-0 advantage.
Falls City added to the lead early in the second quarter with a 10-yard touchdown run by Soto. The senior then ran in from 4 yards out to make it a 19-0 game, and helped account for a final first-half touchdown with 40 seconds to play as he connected with Stephen Harlos from 5 yards out. Another Jendrusch extra point made the score 26-0 at the break.
Defensive adjustments by Sabinal kept the Beavers from scoring in the third, but Falls City found the end zone again in the fourth. With 9:30 to play in the game, Soto capped off a Beaver drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. Jendrusch kicked the extra point, and the score stood at 33-0, a total that would prove final.
Falls City delivered a balanced attack on offense, running 37 times for 207 yards, while also completing 12 of 19 passing plays for another 190 yards.
In addition to Soto’s 12 completions and two touchdowns through the air, the senior was also the team’s leading rusher, carrying the ball 18 times for 132 yards, including one run for 35. Senior Jon Swierc ran five times for 30 yards, and junior David Brodsky ran another five times for 23 yards. Gaskamp was good for 16 yards on the ground, and Jendrusch and Kendall Kanak each picked up another 5.
Gaskamp was the Beavers’ leading receiver with 79 yards on three catches, followed by Harlos was 47 yards, and Swierc with another 33. Austen Camber had two catches for 21 yards, and Brodsky caught a pass for 10.
Eric Wiatrek once again led the tenacious Falls City defense, as he registered 13 tackles en route to the shutout. Dylan Cheatham had six solo tackles to go along with four assists, Camber and Tyler Malcolm were each good for nine tackles, and Colton Beam registered another eight. Devon Lyssy registered the Beavers’ lone sack of the night.
The victory lifts the Beavers to 9-2 on the season, and advances them into the regional semifinal game, where they will face Woodsboro in a rematch from earlier this season. Falls City beat Woodsboro 30-22 when the two played earlier this year. The two teams will meet again Friday, Nov. 30, at Floresville High School’s Eschenburg Field. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
