Jamie Crowder to attend Stephen F. Austin
Jamie Crowder (second from left) of Floresville High School soaks up the moment after signing her letter of intent to play volleyball and attend school at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches. She is joined by (from left) Jaguar Head Volleyball Coach Regan Curran; her mother, Connie Crowder; and her brother, Kyle Crowder.
FLORESVILLE -- Although the Jaguars’ volleyball season ended a few weeks back, things aren’t over for senior Jamie Crowder. The talented Floresville hitter will continue her volleyball career as she attends Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, and plays for the Ladyjacks.
Crowder, who plans to major in kinesiology or biology, didn’t really consider any other schools, and is quite happy with the opportunity she has received from Stephen F. Austin. She will not only be able to continue playing volleyball, but will also have the opportunity to receive a degree, and to advance toward a career in physical therapy.
The road to this point wasn’t always easy, though, and at one point, Crowder had even said goodbye to playing high school volleyball. After earning a spot on the varsity roster her freshman year, Crowder sat out during her sophomore season due to personal reasons. Once Coach Regan Curran was hired to take over and rejuvenate the Jaguar volleyball program, however, Crowder returned for her junior and senior seasons.
“I was very happy to see Coach Curran take over the team,” Crowder said. “I am proud to have played for her.”
With many years of high school and club volleyball under her belt, it was interesting to hear Crowder’s most memorable moments. She laughed a little, and said she knew it was awful to say, but that the moments she remembers most are the plays in which she hit opposing players with her shots, sometimes in the face.
“I know it sounds bad,” she said. “I know it does.”
A quick and aggressive hitting style is what helped Crowder find success, and it’s what helped the Jaguars reach the playoffs in recent years.
Reflecting back on Floresville’s 2012 season, Crowder said the seniors “pushed really hard” and wanted to go as far as the team had been in the past. She said she was proud of the younger girls, and that she hopes they go even further next year.
Looking forward, Crowder is excited for the opportunity to play at the collegiate level, and is also looking forward to moving away from home. She said she is ready to get out on her own. Still, she admits she will miss her friends and family.
“Whether it was just hanging out or going mudding, they were always a phone call away,” she said.
Crowder’s mother, Connie, expressed pride in her daughter and her accomplishments, saying she has worked hard since she began playing volleyball in the first grade.
“I know she will be successful in whatever she does,” Connie said.
Curran was also pleased with Crowder and her decision to attend Stephen F. Austin. She understands it will be tough trying to replace Crowder next year.
“I’m very proud of her,” Curran said. “She will be missed. [I] can’t wait to see what she does in college.”
