POTH -- The 2012-13 basketball season is just getting started, but Poth senior Micah Weaver took a little time recently to look past this year and toward the future. Weaver signed her letter of intent Nov. 16 to attend school and play basketball for Texas A&M University-Kingsville.
The talented four-year letterman had some additional offers, and gave serious consideration to Southeastern Louisiana University, but eventually chose A&M-Kingsville after visiting both campuses.
“I really just loved the school and the girls,” Weaver said. “It felt like the right place to be.”
Weaver is looking forward to her experiences in Kingsville. She said that many of her friends who have already graduated from Poth attend school at A&M-Kingsville, and that makes her feel as though she “won’t be alone.”
Of everything she is leaving behind in Poth, Weaver will especially miss the Pirette basketball team, saying all the girls “are like sisters.”
“I’m going to miss that,” she said.
Weaver has had some great basketball moments at Poth High School, though what she says is most memorable for her is how she was accepted when she moved to town as a freshman.
“I wasn’t sure what to expect, but everyone was warm and welcoming,” she said.
When she isn’t playing basketball or competing in other athletic competitions for Poth, Weaver said her greatest passion is music. And since she isn’t quite sure what she is going to major in, Weaver said she may look into a career in the music industry.
Weaver’s mother, Lori Distephano, said she was “proud” and “very excited” for her daughter. For Lori, her most memorable moment will always be when A&M-Kingsville offered her daughter a scholarship.
“It is such an honor that they would want her so much that they offer to pay for her school,” Lori said. “She has played and worked for this since she was 5. Basketball has always been her love. I’m just so proud of her.”
For one morning at Poth High School, it wasn’t about anything other than what Weaver will be doing next year. It was a great day for Weaver, her family, and Poth High School. But when the hugs were given, the cake was eaten, and pictures were taken, it was time to get back to work.
The Pirettes are working toward yet another state appearance and championship. Weaver knows it’s going to take a lot of work, and that her team will have to overcome its lack of height. She says they are “very quick” and that the team will find ways to win. After all, Weaver still has a season of high school basketball remaining, and she has but one goal -- “win state.”
