Devine FFA takes 2012 Delo Tractor Restoration Competition crown
Chevron Products Co. (a Chevron U.S.A. Inc. division), maker of the Delo brand of technologically advanced engine oils, lubricants, and coolants, crowned Ryan Haass of the Devine FFA Champion of the 2012 Delo Tractor Restoration Competition Oct. 25, for his restoration of a 1970 Case 1070. The Devine entrant was one of 12 finalists invited to Indianapolis to participate in this year’s competition. The national event, which delivers the coveted teen tractor restoration title, took place during the 85th National FFA Convention in Indianapolis. As champion, Ryan receives a $10,000 prize. He is only the second person in the competition’s history to win first place two years in a row. Tractor restoration is a Haass family affair. Ryan’s older brother and sister also competed in the competition, but Ryan is the only one to win.
Colin Graff of the Hondo FFA was voted reserve champion for his restoration of a 1950 John Deere A and received a prize of $5,000. In October 2010, Colin also earned the national reserve title with a 1937 John Deere Model B tractor.
Third place was awarded to Matt Mahler of the Iowa Park FFA for his restoration of a 1955 Ford 850 and received $3,000.
Six of the 12 finalists were from Texas. The other three to represent Texas include:
•Brazos FFA in Wallis -- 1978 John Deere 4440
•Dubiski Career High School in Grand Prairie -- 1956 John Deere 420
•Rogers FFA in Rogers -- 1955 Oliver Super 77
Delo Tractor Restoration
Since 1995 the Delo Tractor Restoration Team Competition has rewarded the determination, mechanical skills, and business savvy of high school-aged tractor restoration experts from around the country. Through the restoration of an antique tractor, participants develop skills applicable to the modern business world. The skills needed for success in the program -- equipment maintenance, teamwork, project management, budgeting, planning, and marketing -- help develop the participants into future leaders in the agriculture community.
All entrants to the Delo Tractor Restoration Team Competition are required to submit a workbook detailing the entire tractor restoration process, from mechanical overhauls of the engine, transmission and auxiliary and ancillary systems, to the external appearance of the tractors. The 12 finalists (eight FFA entrants and four open) are invited to the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis to present their projects to a panel of five professional tractor restorers. Projects are graded on restoration process, results, and documentation, as well as oral presentation and safety precautions.
