Huge turnout for La Vernia Primary health fair
The La Vernia Primary School hosted a health fair at the end of October, and it was a huge success! “Dive into Health and Reading and Catch Good Habits” was the theme and the turnout was higher than expected.
Upon arrival, all participants were given a pamphlet that included a schedule of events and activities, and a helpful map. Festivities began at 5:30 p.m. with supper provided in the cafeteria, followed by rotation of activities from 6-8 p.m.
The activities consisted of four areas on the campus: gym, gardens, reading, and exercise. In the gym, tables lined the perimeter -- manned by different professionals from many industries providing information on making health choices. We had representatives from LVISD Child Nutrition; our district nurse, Mrs. Dickson, representing LVISD Student Health; La Vernia Chiropractic; Be Well South Texas; Dr. Krause with South Texas Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine; and Chef Al from H-E-B; along with a “decorate a cookbook” center.
In the gardens, we had several Master Gardeners set up on separate tables to show hands-on examples of how to make healthy choices through gardening. In the exercise portion of the fair, we had coaches from La Vernia Primary P.E. set up circuits for the children to work through to show the importance of exercise in a healthy lifestyle. Additionally, Hill’s Gym set up some agility stations to show students how to improve coordination, and a children’s Zumba class was taught by Andrea Fontenot.
The final area was a book fair set up in the school library, run by Mrs. Watson and Mrs. Walton. All in all, it was a wonderful evening, with a fresh new way to make learning fun by engaging the students along with their families in hands-on experiences to promote healthy choices.
