Do the names Mr. Mistoffelees and Grizabella sound familiar, or Carbuckety and Jemima? If the musical “CATS” comes to mind, you are correct.
Two young ladies from Floresville have been cast as characters in an all-kids stage production of “Cats” Jan. 4-6 at the Cameo Theatre on East Houston Street in San Antonio.
Avery Douglas and Lauren De Leon, both 10 years old, will portray Jemima and Carbuckety in the Jonathan Pennington production of the iconic Broadway musical.
The famous production, written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, is based on Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot. It was first staged in London in the early 1980s and is the second longest-running musical in Broadway history.
Both girls had to audition for their parts and have been in rehearsals for weeks. They rehearse for three hours a night once or twice a week and learn two song-and-dance numbers at each rehearsal.
They never rehearse the same songs again until tech week, when they’ll rehearse with lights, costumes, and sound; then, they will rehearse the entire show all the way through two times in full costume, but without makeup. They are expected to practice on their own at home and have to remember all the music, lyrics, and choreography, so they will be ready for the big rehearsals during tech week.
The night of the show, their makeup will take at least 45 minutes to complete. In addition to learning lines, lyrics, and dance moves, these two young ladies are also straight-A students in the fifth grade in Floresville.
Avery loves to sing and wants to be a singer when she grows up. She enjoys singing country songs and loves Miranda Lambert. She also has taken piano and guitar lessons. She will play Jemima and gets to incorporate her singing into her acting.
Lauren likes to act and wants to grow up to be an actress. She has some solos and gets free reign to develop her character of Carbuckety. She is inspired by Emma Watson, famed for her role in the “Harry Potter” films.
Show dates for the children’s production are Saturday, Jan. 5, at 7 p.m., and Sunday, Jan. 6, at 3:30 p.m.
Tickets for the show are available online at www.cameocenter.com or call 210-212-5454. The adult cast production dates are on the website, too. That show runs Dec. 15 through Jan. 1. The show on New Year’s Eve is at 8 p.m., followed by fireworks on the rooftop.
