1930-2012

Paul E. Richter Jr. was born Dec. 8, 1930, into a family who made their living farming and ranching in Stockdale, Texas. He passed away on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012.

Growing up, Paul spent most of his time working the family farm. Later, like many young men of his day, Paul went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army, and was stationed in Germany during the Korean Conflict. Upon his return, he worked various jobs before starting up his own businesses as a sheetrock contractor and homebuilder. Paul was one of the original pioneers of “turnkey” drywall in the San Antonio area. Business ventures proved successful, and within a few short years he began to buy farmland near his birthplace north of Stockdale. He was one of the first farmers to drill irrigation wells on his land to irrigate his crops, setting the standard for modern farming in the area. Over time, the farm provided good returns for Paul and his family. He raised cattle and various crops, including peanuts, watermelons, and squash. Paul’s cattle still graze today on the land he so dearly loved.

In 1952 Paul married Vernelle Schraub, and together they had five children. Paul’s legacy of hard work, determination, and love of the outdoors will continue on with his family. He will forever be remembered for his love of hunting and fishing, gambling, listening to oompah music while smoking a cigar, and enjoying a cold beer or two. The family would like to thank the incredibly compassionate staff of Vitas Hospice of San Antonio.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Maggie Ramzinski Richter; brother John; and brother-in-law Lummy Duelm.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Vernelle Schraub Richter; children Dennis Richter and wife Susan, Melanie Wehmeyer and husband Darrell, Duane Richter and wife Colleen, Nancy Nickel and husband Jody, and Randall Richter and wife Cindy; sisters Mary Margaret Duelm and Patsy Telle and husband Gerry; sister-in-law Cecelia Richter; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 5, from 5-7 p.m. in the Finch Funeral Chapel in La Vernia.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Christ Lutheran of Elm Creek Church in Seguin with the Rev. Anne Kolmeier to officiate.

Interment will follow in the Christ Lutheran of Elm Creek Church Cemetery in Seguin.

Memorial donations may be made to Christ Lutheran Church of Elm Creek, Cemetery Fund or Building Fund, 3305 Church Road, Seguin, TX 78155.
