About politics and other things

We received an unsigned letter recently from a Stockdale “Business Owner.”

Of course, our policy is to not publish letters that are unsigned and cannot be confirmed, but there were some interesting points that need addressing.

Ironically, this “businessman” is responding to comments by Jack Dunn, himself a retired Stockdale business owner. Dunn’s letter, published Nov. 14 in the WCN, was headlined: “Greed overtook presidential election.”

Anonymous takes exception to Dunn’s statement: This nation is now home to a huge and extremely greedy entitlement class of people, who truly believe they are entitled to the fruits of someone else’s labor ... .

He/she finds that statement “incredibly hypocritical, seeing that it was greed that first provoked our leaders to take measures necessary to attempt to correct all the wrong that was done a couple of terms back.” Obviously Anonymous is one of the “blame Bush” crowd.

He then correctly writes: “Greed can be defined in several ways. By the healthy and very capable, lazy people that choose to sit on their ass instead of getting a job, because their fear of having their food stamps taken away.

“It can also be defined by the multi-millionnaires that are paying the same amount in taxes as their secretary.” Anonymous is full of Kool-Aid!

There’s more: “Or, how about the business owners that move their companies out of the country and pay their workers peanuts to make a quick million?”

He closes by pleading with people to “OPEN THEIR EYES, and view greed by its true form.”

Let me see ... where to begin? Let me say first that I love Dunn’s opening statement: This once awesome nation, the brilliant snowcap on a distant mountain, the welcome light at the end of the dark road is no more. It has been bludgeoned to death by its own generosity.

I love that ... by its own generosity, because we know that Americans are known for their generosity.

As Dunn wrote, however, in order for the government to give, it first must take from another. While this giving of the fruits of someone else’s labor is billed for political purposes as being generous, it really just assuages the guilt of those who do not give individually.

As for Anonymous’ assertion that millionaires and billionnaires pay “the same amount in taxes as their secretary,” he may have “miswrote.” Perhaps he meant to say that they pay the same tax rate as their secretaries?

The tax rate is paid when money is first earned, such as in manufacturing, but rich folks such as Barack Obama and Mitt Romney pay a lower rate on investments because this is money on which they have already paid taxes -- not that Anonymous wants to be bothered with details.

He also is concerned about corporations moving operations overseas. This is a problem, of course, but when people want to buy cheap stuff and enjoy lower prices on merchandise, who can blame the corporations?

So what is Obama’s answer? He would further punish corporations, raising taxes even more. This would send more manufacturing overseas and increase even more the price that consumers pay.

American corporations already pay the highest corporate tax rates in the developed world. Making taxes even higher makes no sense. Republicans propose eliminating some of the actual tax loopholes, but Obama has said he would veto that; thus we have the standoff now in Washington.

If I may, as a third businessman in this conversation, with my eyes wide open, I will weigh in with Jack Dunn.
