into FICA for close to twenty years. Having two children,
she will draw between 34 and 35 thousand per year until
the first child is 18 and then 2/3 of that amount until
the second child, an infant, reaches that age.
As I have pointed out, the Social Security program
is also an insurance program. The "I" in FICA stands
for insurance. I could find no evidence of a scam.
Ex-Tiger....I was not aware that SS widow benefits
were means tested. When the surviving children are
over 18, the surviving spouse does not qualify for
a caretaker allowance and her widow benefit is determined
by age. I think she has to be at least 60. I may be
wrong but that is my understanding.
Wishing you both a very merry Christmas. Understand
that Calif. has major snow in the mountains...DFW
area is forecast to have a light dusting of snow on
Christmas day.

I think SS is a double edge sword. One of my former coworkers was ready to retire next year after working for the same company for what would have been 40 years. During his time there he was enrolled in what the company calls a contributory pension where the company matches your contributions. Aside of that he contributed to a 401k in which he transferred all of his funds into a stable fund before the recession, keep in mind the company also matches dollar per dollar up to 4%. Throughout his 39 years he also contributed to FICA which he would be receiving full benefits because he would be of age at the time of retirement.

Unfortunately for him and his family he passed away last month due to a knee surgery that caused a blood clot to his heart. His contributory pension amounted to over $2000000 and his 401 over $300000. I'm sure that SS would have paid out well over 2000 a month. He could have opted for $27000 a month for five years or around 7 to 10000 a month for life. Because he had not started the retirement process at the time of death a clause in the pension plan allowed the company to keep the $2000000 in his contributory plan. His wife will only be receiving $3000 a month, his contribution into the 401k. Since he has no children under the age of 18 the SS administration told her she does not qualify for benefits from SS because $3000 a month should be a sufficient income. One being able to live on $3000 a month does not excuse the fact that all of his money was pretty much stolen.

So maybe your right about widowed, spousal and disability benefits being a scam. Although I wonder who is the one doing the scamming. Would you say that my friend and former co-worker, a person that everyone respected was not man enough to provide for his family?

by the government (read taxpayers) will have a severe

been put into a cash box, then the SS fund would be
insolvent a lot sooner. You will probably get your
full social security because the political pressure
to raise FICA taxes a couple of percentage point will
be overwhelming. After all, they have done it 15 times
during my working career.

I am aware of the trust funds, but should the government be borrowing from the surplus of these funds for other purposes and ultimately creating more debt? Why not leave the funds (surplus) for what it was intended for and SS benefits may not be an issue.

When a trust fund is used to cover program deficits in a given year, the Trust Fund balance is reduced. By 2033 payroll taxes are projected to cover only 75% of its obligations to retirees. It's obvious this means 25% percent of Americans are at risk of not receiving what they paid for. I think I agree with Bush, give me my SS money while I'm ahead and let me reinvest it in a stable fund.

Our current government's irresponsible spending and borrowing is at the expense of the American tax payer and worker. It's goes along the same lines of taxing the rich. If you over tax, there is little or no money to reinvest therefore limiting business growth and the creation of new jobs.

If going over the cliff means everyone pays taxes, then I'm all for it.

I still don't think you have a clear picture about the
disposition of the Social Security portion of the payroll
tax. The government borrows all these taxes and issues
a special issue treasury bond to the Social Security
Trust fund. These bonds are redeemed as necessary to
pay for current and future retirees. These bonds form
a part of our national debt and are interest bearing.
There is no cash in the Social Security trust fund.
Because the fund is made up of treasury bonds issued
in the past at a higher rate of interest, the 2011 interest paid to the Social Security trust fund was a litte over four percent. I have read that about 2 percent
raise in the Social Security portion of the payroll tax will
be necessary to assure that current workers receive their full benefits after 2033.

trust fund is separate from the regular Social Security
trust fund and is funded by a separate part of the
payroll tax. The DI (disability insurance) was added
in 1958 at a rate of .25 percent. It is now .9 percent.

that the taxes collected will fund only 75 percent of the
benefits promised.
In the 1980's when the fund exhausted itself, general
funds were used to pay benefits. After the Reagan fix
(raised FICA taxes), the loan from the general fund
was paid in about four years.
The ratio of workers to future retirees is insufficient to sustain solvency of this fund. You
should bear in mind that percentage of people over
sixty five will continue to grow. Bear in mind that
the baby boomer generation is the largest in our history. Combine that with
a declining birth rate and you have a disaster. Your
argument is based on current and past demographics
and really have no bearing on the future.
The annual trustee report for 2012 is available
online. Do yourself a favor, educate yourself on this
subject.

Keep in mind that every one with a legit job pays FICA which means even the 46% not paying taxes must pay FICA.

A lot has changed since you started paying FICA in 1941 including the amount of household income. Even raising the minimum wage draws FICA revenue. As I said before the government draws from the SS account to cover for other spending. Its like taking grocery money and buying booze. If money being drawn for FICA were distributed only for SS benefits there would be no issue.

solvent despite the handwriting on the wall. In fact,
Time magazine published an article in the late 1930's
which predicted the exhaustion of the Social Security
trust fund in the 1980's. Previous generations got
us into the Social Security solvency problem. The
very least that an honest person should do is to
accept that responsibility. As I (prairie grouch)
have said before, my FICA taxes have increased 15
times during my working career. This fact bears witness
that no previous generation has accepted responsibility.
They just put band aids on the program and kicked on
down to the next generation to handle.
By the way, I am a libertarian conservative. I think
that you are just pretending to be a simple twit to
irritate me. Beware, they may introduce a
"claw back" provision in this giant ponzi scheme.

their investment in taxes plus interest in less than
three years. I started paying FICA taxes in 1949 at
one percent. The FICA taxes have been raised 15 times
during my working career. My benefits have exceeded
my contributions by at least 700 percent. The social
security trust fund will be only able to pay about
75 percent of the benefits promised in a little over
25 years.
So instead of reducing the current SS benefits now,
thus lessening the impact on future retirees,
we are kicking the can down the road to rob you of
your promised benefits. Pure Ponzi.
I would suggest that you sue your college for
malpractice and/or breach of promise.

Galveston County opted out of the Social Security System about 30 years ago and retires that were put on another retirement system in lieu of Social Security get about 2 to 3 times as much money in retirement as they would on SS. So, why shouldn't I get back what is rightfully mine? You don't have to answer cause I don't give a rats behind what you think or what your opinion is.

shortfall was forecast in a Time magazine article in

I always thought the problem with SS was that when it was conceived (in my grandparents day)it was like a triangle with the base being the workers and the retired citizens being the tip so in theory it worked - The problem now is that the triangle is turned upside down and there are more retired citizens than there are workers - A problem for sure but still does not change that SS really is not a hand out - Most people who draw SS have paid in - Not all have which is part of the problem also.

Long story short people are living to long as far as the SS theory goes - When it was conceived being 80 or even 75 was not even an option - Probally to simple for you heavy thinkers - LOL

The employer matches the individual payroll tax. The
payroll tax reduction currently in effect is reimbursed
by the general fund.

It would be nice to think we have our own personal Social Security account which we have contributed to our entire working life and can draw from when we reach the required age.

Unfortunately our government draws from the SS account to cover other (unnecassary) spending. It is my theory that they keep raising the age of eligibility because they need more money to spend, not because we are living longer. With high unemployment and more than 50% of Americans not paying taxes that account is quickly running out.

But, never have I read any documents requiring payment of SS by workers that said the money was for previous generations. And, if anyone knows anything about the law, if a legal document does not specifically detail a circumstance or a fact, then it's just as if it doesn't exist pertaining to that contract. And, if the caretakers (Congress) decided to spend that SS funds on building tunnels in Flordia so that turtles could cross safely, that's got nothing to do with the contact they have with me....that only pinpoints their malfeasance.

at the number of people that still think that the money
they contributed to Social Security was put aside for
their retirement. The money that we contributed
enabled our parents (or grandparents in some cases)
to draw their checks. The contributions of our children
and grandchildren enable the present social
security persons to draw their checks. If everybody
contributed enough to fund their retirement, then the
fund would not be facing bankruptcy. The amount that
most people contributed to Medicare Plan A does not begin
to cover a major illness resulting in one hospital stay.
Plan B payments from the individual cover only about
sixty percent of the costs and the government covers
the other forty percent. Any old person at or near
the normal life expectancy age who thinks that they
paid for their retirement are just fooling themselves
in an effort to retain some self respect.
A special note to 4th Generation Texas.....You sound
like our President, blame someone else. The present
generation did not start the slide into a democratic
welfare state.....YOU DID.
Never forget your contributions to Social Security
and Medicare were matched by someone else....Your employer.

and 4.2 state and local taxes. This was dated February
2012 and included a plan to drop the federal rate to

If you would - put yourself as a business owner of a corporation (C Corp.) After it is all said and done (by my experience) we are taxed at 54%.

Yes, there are those that are greedy and treat their employees poorly (as far as pay goes) - have poor working conditions and so on.
But, Facts - not everyone that has a business is like that. But, we all get thrown in the same pot.
We have to temper and maybe even reconsider our belief systems about "corporations". ... Someone had to stick their neck out financially to get a business started.
