LA VERNIA -- The La Vernia Independent School District (ISD) is one step closer to placing brand new iPads in the hands of its employees as the board of trustees approved a resolution authorizing the incentive program to make the devices the personal property of the employee.

Technology Director Allen Bordelon said the program is designed to make the employees more proficient with the device.

“What we are offering to them is that if they complete the required training course, then the iPads are theirs to keep,” Bordelon said. “This will give the employees an incentive to not only use the devices, but to learn how to effectively use them as well.”

Superintendent Tom Harvey praised the program for its ability to utilize the potential available with the iPad.

“There have been many districts who have done this sort of thing and have had great results,” Harvey said. “What we are asking our personnel to do is to come up with potential beneficial uses for the iPad and submit them to me, so we can compile a list and then begin to utilize the possibilities.”

One feature highlighted was the Google Translate app, which allows a person to speak a command in one language and have it recited in another.

“This feature will allow someone who speaks primarily English or Spanish, to have their native language communicated to others around them who may have been limited before,” Bordelon said. “A teacher can make a statement into the iPad in English, and the student can hear it recited back to them in Spanish; it’s truly revolutionary.”

The board expects the iPads to be distributed within the next two weeks.

The board members also amended the academic calendar to add two teacher in-service days on Jan. 3-4. This means the Christmas holiday break will be extended, with students returning to classes Monday, Jan. 7, instead of Jan. 3, as previously scheduled.

Also during the meeting, the board:

•Recognized the boys and girls cross-country teams for their achievements. The girls team recently participated in state competition, earning second place, and members of the boys team also competed at the state level.

•Accepted a $500 donation from the Lions Club for acquisition of diabetic supplies.

***In attendance: Superintendent Tom Harvey; Superintendent’s Secretary Kristen Beavers; Assistant Superintendent Diane Fisher; Finance Director Laura Ramzinski; Board President Michael Jendrusch; Board members James Barnett, David Watson, Janice Gimbel, John Bilicek, and Richard Schier; and Technology Director Allen Bordelon.

Is this an incentive to make teachers stay? Do they have to return it if they leave in June? What about the ones that don't know what they are doing? And the money that was stolen? How is that going to be made up?

That's trash. What a waste of money. Good for you, you get a free ipad, that will affectively do absolutely nothing for your classroom. Hmm, lets get on the high priced apple band wagon. There's only how many cheaper tablets ... More ›
