SAN ANTONIO -- The Floresville Tigers participated in the South San Boys Varsity Basketball Tournament held Nov. 29-Dec. 1.

The Tigers drew the Boerne Greyhounds for their first game. The game was close, but the Tigers had trouble stopping the Greyhounds’ guard penetration, and Boerne pulled out the win 53-45. Estevan Mendiola and Charlie Albert led the Tigers offensively with 8 points and three assists each. Albert also led the team in rebounds with seven.

The Tigers then moved on to play the Somerset Bulldogs. The Tigers put 82 points on the board, led by the offensive explosion of Darren Orth with 19 points. Mason Ray and Albert led in assists with five each, and Albert led the Tigers on the boards with seven rebounds. It was an easy win for the Tigers, finishing 82-45.

Coming off an easy win over the Bulldogs, the Tigers faced the Alice Coyotes. Again, Floresville exploded offensively, putting 70 points on the board. Albert led the team with 12 points, and Jaron Medina added another 11. Mendiola led in assists for the Tigers with three and Robert Barrera dominated the boards with 10 rebounds. The Tigers ran away with another victory against Alice, 70-33.

The only thing holding the Tigers back from playing in the Consolation Championship was the Brackenridge Eagles. The Tigers looked tired the first half of the game, and allowed Brackenridge to take a 17-point lead early in the game. But the Tigers came out of the locker room at halftime down by 14 with a different intensity. Led by the perimeter shooting of Mendiola and Mason Ray, with 18 and 12 points, respectively, and the inside play of Albert, who finished with 20 points, the Tigers got right back into the game. Medina and Orth led in assists with three each, and Albert led on the boards with eight rebounds. The Tigers finally took the lead with just a few minutes left in the game, but fell short in the last few seconds as Brackenridge hit a free throw to give them the 1-point edge on the Tigers, 61-60.

Floresville was set to resume play at home Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m. against the Burbank Bulldogs.
