SAN ANTONIO -- From Georgia to Germany, California to Korea, 12 contestants from military bases around the world have been selected to compete in a mission like no other: Sing their hearts out.

Soldiers, military spouses, and service members will compete to win audiences’ votes in the eighth season of “Operation Rising Star.” The military singing contest based on FOX television’s “American Idol” is scheduled for Dec. 12 and 14 at 7 p.m. in the Fort Sam Houston Theater at 2472 Stanley Road, Bldg. 2270 in San Antonio.

Guest artists Bo Bice, “The Main Squeeze,” R.L., lead singer for R&B group “Next,” and Melissa Neal, 2011 Operation Rising Star winner, will also perform live. Judges are retired U.S. Army Sgt. Maj. Jack Tilley, vocal coach to the stars Debra Byrd (“The Voice,” “American Idol,” “The Next,” and “Majors & Minors”), and country recording artist Michael Peterson.

Both shows will air on the Pentagon Channel at 8 p.m. the day after the live events and can also be viewed at, where viewers can vote for their favorite contestants for two hours following each broadcast. Voting counts for 50 percent of the contestant’s total score.

The winner will be announced at a reveal show Saturday, Dec. 15, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The shows are free and open to Department of Defense cardholders and their guests.
